  • Chun Kuk Do (Chuck Norris MA)

Anyone have experience in Chun Kuk Do (The Universal Way)? It's apparently mixed of Tang Soo Do, TKD, Karate, BJJ, with emphasis on Self Defense, and maybe more, and was created by Chuck Norris in 1995. I do not know anyone attending a CKD school and was looking for some feedback.

Man, what will they come up with next? A person learns Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai and it becomes Thai-jitsu... How about Tae-Jitsu, or Kung-Thai-Jitsu?...

Honestly, I think people just need to train and forget about names or developing new styles. I've trained in boxing, Muay Thai, Tae Kwon Do, wrestling and BJJ and that's all I go by.... I'ts not Box-Thai-Tae-Jitsu. That would sound really stupid. I used to have respect for some of these revered martial artists like Chuck Norris, but they just come across too funny these days.

Actually, Chuck has been walking his own path for a long time. Back in the "70's Chuck and Bob Wall went to Brazil and Chuck even rolled with Helio Gracie.

Chun Kuk Do (The Universal Way) started 10 years ago and one of the reason's it caught my attention is Chuck Norris is such a genuine guy. He has proven himself over and over again in many aspects. That's a great inspiration. In one sense he has sort of lived out the JKD philosophy of throwing away what is useless and using only what is relevent, hence The Universal Way. Chuck has never been arrogant nor does he give attitude to others. He has to be one of the most down to earth people in MA. If Bruce Lee were still alive I bet the two would have remained friends throughout.

To recieve a blackbelt in ChunKukDo you must be awarded a blue belt by the Machado Bros. This is one of chuck norris' mandates of the system.

Rigan tells me that Chuck is a fairly decent grappler...thats cool!

Before Gracie JJ was hot, BB mag would post 2" by 2" articles advertising the Gracie Challenge Videos. Chuck Norris was quoted as saying "A man with 1 years of training in the Gracie system could beat another man with 20 years of traditional martial arts experience"

In UFC 6 or 7 Royce Gracie fought Shaolin Kempo master Ron Van Clief (10th dan). Allthough RVC was in his late 50's, he was ripped and obviously in fighting condition.

Even with his 30+ years of solid MA experience, RVC got taken down and lasted about 10 minutes, if I remember correctly.

Anyways back to Chuck Norris, he's a legend.

Please... One doesn't even have to imagine what would happen... Chuck Norris said it best during the filming of "Way of the Dragon." ... "Bruce Lee would win."

Jack of of all trade, master of none.
Seriously, I have seen a BB of Chuck norris...he demonstrated a Chuck Norris Kata...they even put out head-but (head strike) in the kata. For me, It was a very bad demonstration of what is supposed to be an innovative MA. The BB kicks and punches were sloppy and that was just plain simple bad American kenpo with a new marketing image.
One Goju Ryu Instructor almost started laughing at the demonstration.

I have seen a demo put on by Chuck Norris blackbelt Danny Lane and it was quite good..at least for athleticism and beautiful kicks. Nothing was sloppy..mybe not practical, but definately not sloppy. Chuck has pretty high standards.

There is also a very cool Demo that I saw with Chuck and Carlos machado demonstrating jiu-jitsu in Germany. They take turns turning each other into a pretzel on a large dance floor with music and strobe lights and chuck was very crisp and smooth with his moves.

It really inspires me to see guys in their 50's and 60's kicking a$$ like that.
Dan Inosanto is another one..just amazing.

                        Chun Kuk Do History

Here's a little history on Carlos Ray "Chuck" Norris and Chun Kuk Do. Chuck Norris began training in judo in 1958 while in the U.S. Airforce. At the rank of brown belt he began training in Tang Soo Do Moo Duk Kwan under Jae Chul Shin in 1960.

In 1966, in an effort to improve on his traditional TSD style, he started to modify the system. Chuck began training with masters Ed Parker, Fumio Demura, and Tak Kubota to improve his and his students punching skills. Al Dacascos on kung fu-type moves for fluidity. And Gene LeBell and Hayward Nishioka on grabs, throws, and sweeps. What resulted from that mesh of styles was what later be call Norris or American Tang Soo Do.

In 1973, Norris founded the National Tang Soo Do Congress until around 1978 or '79. He eventually dissolved the NTC and founded his UFAF and stopped referring to the organization's style as TSD but as the "Chuck Norris System". Around that time the original 325 Chuck Norris Tang Soo Do black belts, went in one of 2 directions. Most remained with Norris an the rest went out on their own and continued to teach American Tang Soo Do.

In 1985 or so, due to liability concerns his name was removed and the system was simply called UFAF. Chuck first heard of the Gracies while on a scuba diving trip with Bob Wall in 1987, where the duo trained with the Gracies for a couple of days.

In 1990, 2 things happened. One was that Chuck had finally chosen a name for his art "Chun Kuk Do" or "universal way". The other was that Chuck began training with the Machado brothers (descendants of Carlos Gracie Sr.) in Brazillian jujutsu and began implementing the art into own ever since. In order to advance past 2nd. dan in CKD you must be proficient in grappling.
