  • Need help understanding the different MA competitions (K-1, UFC, Pride)...

I know of these different MA competitions but I'm not sure how they work. I've gathered, though, from what people say on here that they have different rules, etc.

The only one I've watched is UFC, which seems to have lots of grappling. I've heard they can't stay on the mat forever anymore, though. Is this true? I hope so because watching grapplers try to get a submission for 30 minutes was BOOOOOORING!! UFC tends to not be that exciting to me unless someone crazy is on there like Tank, lol.

The K-1 clips I've seen have shown it to be more of a striking-oriented competition. Is this correct? I've found the K-1 matches I've seen to be much more fast-paced and exciting than UFC matches.

As far as PRIDE, I've never seen it before so I don't know.

Could anyone give me an explanation of these three competitions so that I can better understand what they're about?

Where have you been the past 10 years, living under a rock? Just kidding...

    K-1 is a kickboxing tournament.

UFC is a "no holds barred" tournament with limited rules. Contestants fight in a caged octagon.

Pride is a "no holds barred" tournament with limited rules. Contestants fight in a ring.

If you think two guys working the ground is boring, then you shouldn't invest your time in Pride or UFC... But for some of us, watching the intricacies of a grappling match is exciting.

With all due respect, you should just watch boxing.

      Thanks for the info.

I am not saying that grappling does not take skill... I know I sure as hell couldn't do it as well as those guys. Watching two guys go for a submission is like watching paint dry, though, if you're not a grappler. I will be taking some grappling/submission classes very soon and I'm sure I'll gain more of an appreciation for it. Still, I don't think there is anything more exciting than a high-speed striking match... even if you are a grappler

I know where your coming from, just a few months back I thought grappling was boring too, but ya, after a few lesson you really gain respect for the complexity behind it, especially when you realize that even though it looks like nothing is happening, a lot is going on.

          M. Artist, I have no clue what the IFC is can you fill me in?

          Sincerly,

            Hum,
there is some fighters in Pride that do favour striking over grappling
I think Chute Boxe team are pretty exicting when it comes to striking.
If you get a chance, Pride is pretty good for strinking action.
But for your taste, K1 is definitely the right stuff: only striking.
