Why don't you go ask Phil Elmore. He's a member of "Crime Watch"!!!! And he carries a maglight too!!!!
Not every state has the cc law. The guardian angels were empty handed as well; they had many chances to apply knife, stick and gun disarms. Curtis Sliwa got jacked by two guys with guns and lived to tell about it. I never really thought about it, but they operated empty handed and cleaned out some of the toughest neighborhoods.
A crime watch doesn't seem like a deterrent, but if they have a direct link to the police and enough men to get the job done they could be. The Angels were.
I'm sorry people. Phil Elmore is clearly an open-minded great individual who's in peak physical condition.
You made the point that his watch group was ineffective, because of their lack of firearms, but the Angels too lacked firearms (and obviously suffered losses) but overall cleaned up many troubled neighborhoods.
I am pretty sure he as doing demonstrations with Matt but it's been awhile since he's been on here. I may be wrong though. Easiest way to find out would be to ask Matt.
I know he was asked to participate here by Tim, and that he is probably much more versed in self defense then our resident 16 year old H2H.
Natural "amour"? That's referred as the ability to receive many blows
Seriously, you can't judge a person's fighting ability by the way that they look.
i think they are still around. i live in NYC. i saw a few of them walking around a while ago, about six months ago. they were older guys, probably the veterans of the group. when i was a kid there were definitely more especially in the shadier hoods, which mine happens(ed) to be . on the J train...
Dude being heavy doesnt mean being weak. Duh. Look at any Olympic lifter heavyweight. look at any pro powerlifter. Look at Mikhail Ryabko of Russian martial art. Or Bob Sapp.
I was saying that shape and size of a person an be misleading; a heavy person allthough appears to be slow, might be quick; a thin person who might appear weak, might be able to hit hard.
theres a big chubby guy at the school i train at. he doesnt look intimidating at all, he just looks like a big slow gentle giant. he came to the sparring class last week, and what do u know, he moved like lighting and would pull off some big combos. this dude worked me, and pretty much everyone else in the class. looks can be deceiving.

Likewise, I sparred a pro-148 pounder a while back. Not only did he make me miss most of my shots (suprise there), he hit EXTREMELY hard for a guy at that weight.
If you decide to sparr a few rounds with a pro, you will miss alot and eat plenty o' glove. Its simply immposible to match their intensity.
