All Grappling is effective, of course Dummies! BJJ is very good and so is Sambo, Free style, Greco..etc. Anyone heard of "Dumog" Filipino style grappling?

There are two kinds of Dumogs: sport and street oriented.
In the sport version you have to bring your opponent on his back and keep him there for something like 10s...I rolled with a Dumog champion in the Philippines (also an arnis champion), he used sport Dumog and I BJJ-Sambo.The guy was very good in stand up and took me easily to the ground, but he wasn't able to submit me there. Dumogueros use their chin as an extra limb to control their opponents....

This thread shouldn't be here in the first place, considering it's in the BJJ forum, plus this stuff doesn't go anywhere, no one benefits from it. Anyway, as to if it's effective, well, if you can utilize it, then yes it's effective, but if you can't and aren't comfortable with it, then for you, no, it's not. Simple.

I personally like BJJ very much, I suck at it but like watching it and hope to train in it regularly soon. I've taken a class at SBGi and one at my college, and while no, I wouldn't do straight up BJJ against an attacker, as obviously no one would here I think, BJJ's principles are very important and builds great tactile sense as well as ups your endurance etc.

Go to Edmunton in north london one night after 1100 pm have a wonder round the back streets where 13 year old kids carry blades up there sleeves in their back pockets.

Try your BJJ on them and let me know of the outcome if u make it back alive

                          Yeah, I'll do that.

Only the strip-mall karate can cope with the notorious tough canadian teenagers.

You're right. Only flutteringpeacocktoodeadlytoreallypractice style really gets it done (inside your dojo-parents' basement with the door locked).

There's plenty to do with wrestling, go to Amazon.com and type in "kill as catch can" on the search engine and check out the book by Ned Beaumont, it's a very good book on getting an idea on how just regular freestyle wrestling can be very applicable to the street.

BJJ is fine for self-defense. I don't know where you people go out, but the streets where I live aren't covered in glass or syringes or lava. I've actually had a friend get back mount on a guy in a fight and they rolled over broken glass and he didn't get a scratch.

Let's put this in perspective: Most fights occur in pubs and clubs (around alcohol). Most people don't take weapons into clubs, and generally the bouncers are going to stop someone bringing in a gun or knife. Unless you go to rough bars, the chance of getting into a fight is very slim. It's even slimmer that you will be attacked with a knife or gun.

As for taking on gangs of marauding youths armed with knives: a) don't go to those areas b) don't look like a victim c) which art can guarantee that you will come out alive from this situation?

BTW, I know plenty of people who have used BJJ to defend themselves on the street, including against multiple opponents and opponents with weapons.

For a BJJ forum, there sure are a lot of haters...
