I did some years ago, and my impressions were that it's one of the most beautiful arts & the circular movements are effortless when executed properly, but the attackers always had to run towards you with an outstretched arm or something similar. This was to ensure that there was momentum to be redirected, and to ensure that a limb was waiting to be controlled.

I've been able to watch some footage of Aikido masters in action, and I still see multiple attackers queued up ready to run at the master so he can do his shihonage or whatever. I've never seen actual multiple attacks simultaneously, or completely random attacks from an individual who was allowed to do anything.

Don't get me wrong - I don't think any martial art can honestly say it's 100% effective on the streets, but I'd love to see some aikido footage where the action is less scripted to prove that it truely is effective against larger/stronger opponents. Have you any examples of this?

Not trying to start a 'my art better than yours', but a debate. What do you think?
addressing wat u said earlier i have used aikedo on the street and u were right tht straight aikedo is very difficuly but my main open hand martial art is tai chi so i incorporated some aikedo and tai chi together and it was very effective

How about you stop reviving threads that are 2 years old to tell us about something useless. Honestly, can't you post in ANY new threads?

I prefer the basic techniques of bowling and baseball, along with brick dropping from large buildings. It works. Don't believe me? Ask your mom's OBGYN why you came out looking the way you did. It was an accident, i swear.

Do you know what Tai Chi is? Base on your response, I think you watched too many old men waving their hands around thinking that is how they fight. Real Tai Chi have really simple movements. Cliching the forearm and pushing for example. My father used to defend himself using a couple of Tai Chi techiques. There is no circular beautiful movements at all.

Aikido however, I am not sure about.

Not the techniques that I saw at least. But of course, I cannot speak for the whole art. Also, I forgot what is the name of that one book. If I remember it, I'll try to post some of the explanations.

Could be you weren't looking very carefully. (or that you are defining 'circular' rather broadly)

Nope. I think you are thinking about forms tai chi where you starting out by raising your arms etc.

I am talking about specific techniques shown against someone. Not elaborate forms.
