I am newbies to both styles, but from my limited experience it seems like the wrestling/judo comparison is just like the boxing/muay thai comparison.

I study Judo, I haven't taken wrestling since High-school though I watch college wrestling on TV. My opinions are biased. What does wrestling have that Judo does not? Wrestling appears to me to be very much about brute strength, whereas Judo is about NOT Having to use brute strength and allowing technique to win. Judo has pins, matholds, chokes, strangles, joint locks, grappling and throws. If a fight were to go to the end against two equal contestants, I would pick Judo. I just can't see anything in College tournament wrestling not found in Judo.

If you believe wrestling is basically brute strength then you obviously do not know a lot about it. Wrestling has a few takedwons not found in judo or that are uncommon in judo while judo has more subs than wrestling.Originally posted by HtTKarI study Judo, I haven't taken wrestling since High-school though I watch college wrestling on TV. well, I said I was biased, but at least I chose a side.
Judo has 67 throwing techniques and 22 striking techniques which include punches and kicks. There are many different types of takedowns, submissions, pins, locks, etc. Personally I think that wrestling would be at the disadvantage as they dont teach strangles, chokes, or striking. What exactly is there in wresting that is not found in Judo? Just because something is "uncommon" doesnt mean that it isn't there.

Some single leg variations I learned in wrestling were not taught in any judo classes I took and the high crotch was not very common. Judo does have an advantage over wrestling with its submssions. The wrestler could win if he got a takedown and landed in a dominant position from where he could flail away. The two arts are similar in the way they both use techniques to offbalance the opponent.Originally posted by HtTKarwell, I said I was biased, but at least I chose a side.
