Nipple piercing and BJJ

I just got a message from Angela Gracie, and she says she knows a girl who does BJJ regularly and has both nipples pierced, and that she doesn't have any problems with them. But she did recommend anyone considering it should get it done before a vacation period so they can heal before the rolling starts.

One of my buddies has eyebrow piercings, about a dozen ear peircing, who knows what else. I asked why he doesnt remove them when sparring.
He wears these things on a daily basis. If he ends up in a real fight, he'll be wearing them so he might as well get used to getting hit with them in. He tapes them up so he doesn't hurt others unintentionally, but since training is supposed to be realistic no need to remove them.

Hi,
I have some experiance with this. I have both nipples pierced as well as other piercings that would hurt if torn out or even hit wrong. For nipple piercings, if they are (very) well healed, a pair of barbells(curved if healed with "rings") the are properly fitted would reduce the chances of tear out. Also anything a bit thicker has less chance of tearing out. I also highly reccomend puting sports tape over the piercing covering the whole area. Tear out is always a possibility, but if your in a fight, your going to have to avoid it anyway. Like my septum, if i get popped in the nose it hurts a bit cause it jams into my cartalage...so I don't get hit.But the nipples, it is very possible to train with them. Best of luck.

Thanks, MarcoB.
I'm going to get it done with my sister, but we'll just have to wait till a time when I've got no BJJ for a while... Maybe when my instructor goes away on a holiday, or if I happen to get another incidental injury that takes me out of training for a while. (The second is more likely!)

Hi,
I just wanted to mention, you are going to need a long while for it to heal. They are extremely sensitive for around six months and take sometimes longer to "toughen up" to the point where they can take some punishment. The best source for information on this is www.bmezine.com They also have a Question of The Day forum where you can write in and ask about specifics. But I would give it a long while to heal. I don't think a vacation time is going to give you the length of time you need to get it comfortable; and I don't know as its worth it to you to take six months to a year off from training. Also, if you are not careful with them for the first part of healing, or they get torn frequently because they are not fully healed, they can create scar tissue in the nipple, leading to blockage of ducts in women..AKA: Mastitis. I'd give it a great deal of thought, better to go in fully informed than be suprised. If you do decide to do it though, I wish you the best of luck with healing your piercings.
PS: one last thing(sorry, Im too focused on details sometimes) unless you want it to get constantly knocked around or grabbed or flicked, I'd suggest keeping it on the D/L. Some regularly sane polite people can be downright rude and immature when they find out you have this piercing. Good luck.
