Sorry I have seen Tank Abbot bench 600 or something, dont know where a link to it is though... however I will provide you with this:

Andy Fiedler Benching 800 pounds RAW, (Raw is without a benchpress shirt, bench shirts have been known to add anywhere from 20 to 150 pounds on someones benchpress)

Or this 965 pound benchpress from Gene Rychlak.

I believe Gene Rychlak does hold the world benchpress record, at 1005 pounds, not 1050 lol, although I could be wrong.

See how tightly he was strapped into that shirt? And notice how long it took him to get set up, thats where the big benches happen.

Not sure if those links will work ^^^^^ if they dont go here for a thread with tons of powerlifting videos (both those videos came from here).

I know that children's BJJ has more coloured belts, yellow, orange, etc., but the guy in the story is 22?

          Any of you have kids?
BJJ does have green belts, also yellow and orange. They're for young people.
You essentially can't get a Blue belt until you're 16 (makes sense, certainly weird to see 6 y.o. Black Belts in "some arts") on the premise that if you're a Blue belt, you should be able to fight at an adult level.
Meanwhile, it's helpful for the kids to have a system to keep them sorted until they turn 16. So kids go white, yellow, orange, and green. Long time at each belt (just like adults). When they turn 16, they're ready to try for blue. I think it's a pretty good system.
I can only speak for the schools I know (out here in CA, under Charles and Ralph Gracie, plus a couple of others).
So I'd guess that the victor was a 15 y.o. green belt kid, though that doesn't quite match with the 22 year old age cited. So I don't know - but a green belt, being not far removed from a Blue (possibly being quite ready for it) could realistically tap a bigger but less experienced opponent.

Bench pressing doesn't equate to much against a skilled grappler. I've rolled with guys you can bench 500 lbs and it doesn't feel any different when they're offbalance and awkward. The human body is not balanced like a weighted bar, so it's different when trying to pry someone off yourself. A guy can bench 800 lbs, but if you're on top and know how to control the top position, he's going to gass out. This story really doesn't surprise me. I've seen it happen on many occassions.

His wrestling experience will help him much more than any muscle mass, and even there he won't know when he's in danger of being submitted until it's too late.

Typically, a big guy new to submission grappling tries to overpower you - He charges in, ends up in your guard (wich he doesn't even recognize as a threat, much less try to escape), and while he's trying to stack or choke, you pass an arm for triangle or arm bar. I've probably done that to guys with 70+ pounds on me two dozen times. Of course, they then stay in class and three months later are exponentially harder to deal with .
Man you desribed the roll just as it went down, that is exactly how it happened...

As far as doubting the green belt issue (this part of this post is meant for other's that doubt), do some research, you'll find that Carlos Machado student's with school's have green belt rank's in their system, especially the one's that incorporate Vale Tudo in their system's...
