Cheap place to learn BJJ in LA?

I am looking for a place to train in BJJ in the LA area. I haven't found any other than the Gracia Jiu Jitsu Academy and the Torrance Machado Jiu Jitsu Academy. Both these places are a little too expensive for me. They both cost $80 a month for ONE class per week which is only one hour! Anyone know of any good BJJ places which don't cost so much?

I can tell you right now you won't find much cheaper, and if you do the quality may suffer. LA is packed full of great BJJ, just check the yellow pages and make some phone calls. One school that is slightly cheaper is the Lima Academy in Culver City right across from the Fox Hills mall. Classes are taught by Gerson Sanginitto, a Gracie Barra alumni and a black belt under Rigan. Call them at (310) 670-1094. Don't let the "one hour" thing fool you. Classes at the Machado Torrance Academy NEVER last only an hour and rarely end on time (or start on time for that matter).

I don't know of any cheap place to train in LA.

But....
there are a few places where you can get quality instruction and it won't be expensive.
I train with Rey Diogo, black belt under Carlson Gracie.
He's a four time Brazilain champion.
For $100 a month, you can train 4 times a week, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturdays. Tuesdays and Thursdays, there are morning classes and so a possible of actually 6 times a week.

as I've said before, I can train at many places, from Rickson's on the north side, to down south, the Machado's and Torrance, and I've also trained at BHJJC but I now call Rey Diogo's school home.

There are many quality instructors in Los Angeles, but I found Rey to be one instructor that is very passionate about teaching you BJJ. I've been shown many moves, but Rey wants to show you the move and then he wants you to prove to him that you know it, otherwise, he keeps helping you until you can do it.

Come take a free class and check it out.
For that matter, you can be a real El Cheapo and go to every school in the Southern California area and get one free class at every school. I have a friend that did just that. He was un-employed for a while and went around to every BJJ school to get the free lesson. What a scrub.

I'm sorry but that really cracked me up about your friend! I can't say I blame him though. Considering the cost of EVERYTHING in LA I am not looking forward to it. I am afraid I may have to make do with my mat in my garage and finding a training partner!

I totally agree with Sweep; When I travel to LA on business, I have the time and money to train wherever I want, and I wouldn't train anywhere else.

Rey is totally involved, and makes SURE that you understand the techniques. I also really liked the atmosphere of the school and students. A great group of guys, very helpful.

The search continues for a large place for us to move to.

Suuuuure. Of course it's hollywood, but then again, I don't think that they would be training BJJ by taking your back.

Believe me, you're not even kidding. Especially in MY neighborhood. I've been meaning to check out BHJJ Club. I've heard nothing but good things. The truth is that I'm moving out of here in February so I'm not sure exactly which school would be closeest. I went to the school across the street from my house, but it's traditional JJ and they thought of me as a dirt-roller (until I tapped one of their purple belts) There's just too much yelling and shreiking in traditional arts. I get enough of that !@#$ in my building.

Save yourself some dough and go to a Judo school dude.
Ive been doing Judo for a few months now and I know I could hold my own or defeat a BJJ guy with the same amount of training as me.

My Judo lessons are $30 a month for 90 minute lessons per week. Dont get ripped off dude.

However, I think Grahf1 should take Judo if he really needs to cut back... After all, it is the second-best grappling art.

Didn't Kimura train in judo?Didn't he defeat Helio gracie?

By my calculations, he was also about 18 times bigger than Helio. As all chicks know, size DOES matter. All styles have their strengths/weaknesses. A judo guy would throw me around like a rag doll, but I could probably get him in a pretty fast choke. Who cares? Why can't we all just get along. I just don't like the "tradition" of other martial arts. I like coming in, stretching, learning some techniques and getting down to business. I'm looking to stay in shape, not find myself.
