Oh yea..I almost forgot..this school is also an official dealer for Cold Steel Knives. And they carry all the Cold Steel products in their pro shop. Students are always encouraged to buy knives! More knives! And when there is a school wide contest or game...usually a new knife is the prize!

Does anyone see a problem with this?

I agree totally, and have a real life example...

Yesterday my girlfriend (who weighs 45lbs less than me) sneaked up behind me whilst I was sat typing on the PC and put a teatowl around my neck. I didn't bother to defend my neck as we often 'muck about' and I trust her (sucker). I calmly told her she was choking me after a couple of seconds, and (bless her) she proceeded to tighten it. The last thing I remember is the keyboard coming towards my face as I blacked out. This is the honest truth!

Moral 1: Don't trust your better half to be sweet ALL of the time

Moral 2: Someone doesn't have to be strong, skilled or do martial arts to be a formidable opponent.

Geesh... How the heck are we suppose to read through all that?! But I get your point... And I agree. For all the claims that TMA's SD specialists, or what have you make, they couldn't throw down with anyone in a random sparring match.

hermosa i agree with you alot of people in the "orig" jkd and jkd concepts world and alot of TMA even some bjj people are claming to be experts and certified and they all suck so bad its funny.Im very wary of alot of the knife defenses and gun defenses taught out there....they usually work at phony distances and not against any real resistance.Krav Maga is the only art i trust for the gun and knife defenses along with paul vunak's,burnton richardson's and matt thornton's methods.People need to be very carefull not to get had by mcdojo wannabe's and sadly about 95% of "certified" jkd schools are just mcdojoist.

For self defense I will go with the mindset from my Krav Maga training, and all the skills I learned there, and I will also uses my MMA skills with that mindset...

It is more of a question of mindset I think.... being able to understand what you need to do and carrying through with it... along with having the right amount of urgency and fear in your actions...

I'd also like to bring up the point about.. getting hit in the nuts etc.... and how it would defeat MMA... well... I just thought about the Hughes vs Trigg 2 fight... Hughes gets a kick to the groin, starts to lose, and battles out of it... and Trigg was looking to bash Hughes face in right after... sure it was only the one groin shot.. but it proves you can fight out and win after a technique like that.. they arent the be all and end all....

where as in Triggs case a good RNC is haha..

oh and for the guy who got choked out by his gf... when Iwas about 12 I was walking up my stairs and my older sister... for w/e reason.. jumped out and put me in a RNC (not the greatest technique but thats what it was), and before I knew it I woke up on the bathroom floor about 6 feet away...

on the other hand ive never been knocked out by anyone at BJJ... or boxing/kickboxng for that matter.

i agree with JKD's original tirade. stay calm dude!

i do think that MMA guys/martial athletes are better prepared than most of the other styles/methods out there. i'd just like them (including me) to do more multiple opponent sparring and defending against weapons sparring as well as our normal one-on-one stuff. just for the experience and because it can help to keep you humble when you see how hard it is to even stop someone that is doing their best trying to stab you with a rubber knife.

then we could say we train against resisting opponents one-on-one, multiples and weapons! that would shut the nay-sayers up!

As my 9th grade football coach used to say, "you have to practice like you play".

The moral to the story, you have to fight to be a good fighter. A simple fact of life is that you will eat a punch or two in the course of a fight. Boxers have known this for generations. And guess what? Boxers, MMA-ists, MT, etc all know that in order to be a good fighter, you simply have to fight....hopefully in a controlled environment (i.e. class, dojo, etc).

I grew up with a kid who's dad was supposed to be this super badass karate guy (Kempo I think). He and his dad were both pretty high up the belts. We all know how the story goes. He got into a scrap at school and one haymaker later he was done for. Not that it was a great shot, but because he'd never traind in that sort of environment. Basically its the same lesson the world learned when Bruce Lee bucked the system, and again 25 years later with the UFC.

This has no real point other than to stroke my delicate ego...

I got in alot of fights in junior high and high school. Now people did not know ANY thing about MA back then. If you did martial arts you were a dork. It wasn't mainstream like today.

But I got in a fight with this kid and I ACTUALLY landed a spinning heel kick and knocked him down. This was my Taekwondo days. I tell you...that felt absolutely amazing. At the time, I didn't think that it was that far out there..that is how TKD is supposed to work...but looking back..I CAN'T BELIEVE IT WORKED!!
