  • Strikes to Throat or Chin

I have a question for all you guys.

I often hear guys (some who seem to know what they are talking about) say "When training we dont hit hard because everyone knows that if I palm strike you on the chin you will be knocked out" but I have been hit many times on the chin (with palms and fists) and have NEVER been knocked out from it (anyone ever seen a sport called "boxing" where this happens all the time ).

Is this some imagined "Deadly" fight stopper like an eye gouge or groin shot (which in reality do not always stop people and often just make them angry) that I should just ignore?

I have also been hit in the throat but have found that with a few years of grappling and JJ that my neck muscles have built up quite a lot and my throat can take a few shots without ill effect (as long as you pull your chin back so your adams apple is not sticking out). My old JJ instructor used to stand there and let us strike him in the throat so I tend to think that this is another "killer" technique people dont really use when training and just assume is deadly. We also started training doing this so I have been hit many times in the throat. It hurts but I am still here writing this.

    Any opinions?

Yeah i have , but if i had never got a particular sub I would start to question if it would work rather than assume it would always work

Just a safety concern then; liabilility issue...u did say you were somewhat conditioned to be able to handle these kind's of stuff.

?Fable..the world 's a jungle...and only some could really accept strike's on the chin for the sake of a positive experience. i.e. the learning of skill's to defend oneself.

Not sure what you are trying to say but I do have a clarification to what i said above as you seem to have misunderstood.

I did not let people hit me in the chin for conditioning as that would be pretty pointless. I was hit on the chin when I was a boxer and am still regularly hit (damn it!!) during sparring. I did let them strike me in the throat as it is possible to learn to position your head correctly so as to protect your adams apple (the part that makes throat strikes dangerous).

Well, I can clear everything up for you. There is no technique that always works. End of story. . . . .

                  medic06,

I realize that but what I am saying is that you very rarely see someone knocked out from a hit to the chin and this seems to be a technique that self defense people rely on to finish a fight in seconds and it seems to be a load of crap. I have seen it used in the old "street vs sport" argument to show why SD guys are so much more dangerous than everyone else.

What I am looking for is people who have used it to sucessfully end a fight in seconds. Otherwise I am going to assume it is just another martial arts myth and forgat about it.

Have you ever done it or seen it done? if not, do you train to use it and if so, why.

JKD187, I thought because of some of the people who had mentioned this move there may actually be something to it but I think it will be going back into the "deadly techniques" book of urban myths.

                    Are they exactly the same?
What did it look like to you?You might find that I am is people who have used it to sucessfully end a fight in seconds. In that case: I am very happy for you.Ho-hum I am really not interested in sex.I'm not too good with negative counterfactuals. What happened to it?

The Program E chat robot can follow many things, like our discussion about DCam. But I did not get that.

good idea...there isnt anything to fear from the WW2 combatives chin jab and trip technique that the self defense guys use. They all got that bullshit from some judo jerk who worked for the police dept in Shanghia teaching self defense then he taught a bunch of those stupid commando guys to use it...what the hell did they know about fighting...commandos used guns we all know that. when the hell will people figure out if professional athletes dont use it in the ring its useless for self defense?

Dude, why don't you follow your own advice and go to a boxing gym. Have a someone land a Straight Right or better yet, a Left Hook on your jaw. When you wake up, report back to us.

what that crap those boxers do? that doesnt work on bjj guys...remember helio said its a bullet proof shield...obviously boxing is a waste of time on those supermen who do bjj...they build up more resistance to strikes grappeling than strikers do striking...bjj guys are immune

                              Guys,

I did not say it never works I said that it has never worked on me (I am sure it would if I fought Ali or Tyson). If you read my posts you would see that I have done plenty of boxing but to assume that as soon as I hit someone on the end of the chin they will fall down unconcious is just stupid. Sometimes they will and sometimes they wont. Unless you are Mike Tyson it will be much more of the latter.

Since we are talking about the UFC, have you ever seen anyone get hit in the chin and not fall down? Oh my god!!!

I think to train as if everyone you hit on the chin will fall unconcious is just crap. Does that mean you should not train to punch to the head, no, but you should not assume that one punch will end the fight which seems to be a common way of thinking.

That was my point. Perhaps I made it badly as nobody seemed to get it.

Boar, just because some military guys use a technique (or used it 60 years ago) does not mean it is the answer to everything. The emphasis in special forces (as you are well aware) is on using any weapon available and only to use bare hands when there is nothing else so the primary focus is on the use of weapons.

Also, I have done many years more boxing than BJJ/MMA so I think that saying I am a BJJ'er who thinks he is immune to boxing strikes is a bit unfair (and you knew this fact because we have discussed it before).
