  • how do you defend against a takedown?

i mean from a clinch position and the guy is preparing to take you down.
as far as i know, the sprawl is for defence against a shoot from a distance only, you cant use it in a clinch coz you are already "locked up" and cant move your body much?

Nope. A sprawl is a reaction to a shot. Wherever the shot comes from, you can react to it in a number of ways depending on the circumstance. Sprawling is one possible reaction. How you will react will depend on how he is trying to take you down (among other things). You oughta be considering how you will take him down.

you could try throwing some knees and uppercuts from the clintch if hes winded or dazed probably wont be able to take you down.

what about pushing down on the head as he is shooting in? that was one that a mma fighter at my gym showed me. he said try to push down on the head if possible and make him turtle and step to the side so u can take his back or strike him.

the proper distance to shoot in is when you are close enough to tough the opponents head....I dont think pushing the guys head who is shooting will do anything, by then he;s already got your legs and its time for some ground and pound

Well it depends on what kind of takedown he's going for. Is he going for a trip? Is he doing a shot? If he's doing a shot you can still sprawl. He may be in tight but the key to defending a takedown with a sprawl is exploding with the hip and legs. Hip into him multiple times to break his posture and explode your legs back. Once his posture is gone the takedown goes with it. From there it's just a matter of preference what you wanna do.

Keep him from being able to get his hips under yours, and keep your head up. If he shoots you sprawl. Work pummeling drills and learn to tie him up so he can't set up his takedown.

Your hips should be lower then his, but make sure your head stays up, and if you can get his down. If you look down you will get snapped down and land in a front headlock get a few knees and end up on your back

Don't let him tie up, and if he shoots, ram your knee into his face and then if he's still driving, sprawl and hit him with tons of elbows to the brain stem or back of the head till it turns to mush gravy. Crossfacing someone with their head up on your hip is a great way to turn him off, if it's on the street and you want to use it, catch him right upside the nose, HARD, and do it over and over, with short choppy strikes with lots of followthrough.
