    I believe...

royce was the one being told it means stop.

royler was the one who was being lifted off the ground, but kept on going. this is when the judo guy said he was going to drop him on his head and rorion said "go ahead, they are used to it". I don't think royler knew you had to stop if you were lifted off the ground.

geezus, besides their egos did anyone get hurt???

      I like gjj/bjj but,

Rorian marketing game is what i don't like at all.
Why did they not show" kimura vs helio, ron tripp vs rickson, saylor vs rorion" on the tape

        Vortex,
I don't think anyone will argue that BJJ newaza has the edge on judo newaza (why do you think I want to compete in judo? )
But seriously, the arts are the same "style" so to speak, but focus on different things. Throwing for judoka, newaza for BJJ men. Just so happens that newaza is an extremely effective way of fighting.
I study judo newaza, and nagewaza as much as I can, and I love the cultural aspect of the sport, but I also learned as much BJJ as I could as well. They compliment each other. Hell, BJJ guys can run me over for the most part. Same with good judo men.

          duchman...

kimura x helio is on gracie in action as well as the history of GJJ tape.

I am not sure if the throw of rickson is on tape. even if it is, big deal. I think funaki and takada also both threw rickson, and looked what happened. heh.

          who is saylor?

I once read in Blackbelt magazine that Gene LeBell had offered to throw down with Helio. This was about the time when Royce did a stint of writing about BJJ for Blackbelt.

I seem to recall that Royce had replied that his father was an old man, and was not up to the challenge. LeBell then offered to fight the younger Gracies and still no there was not a fight. I don't know if this was a true story but I did read this. Did anyone else read this column? If the story is true, do the Gracies pick people that don't have good skills to rack up wins and sell their art. I don't really know a whole lot about the Gracies or BJJ, but I do know that I was bored to death watching Royce fight in the few UFC'S that I have seen. I also find it a bit unrealistic that the Gracies claimed to have never been beaten in all of their challenge matches in Brazil. There had to be someone that could have beaten them in all of Brazil.

Just an innocent post, not trying to be rude.

Carlos said that Royce was beaten plenty of times in Brazil. This was back when he was less experienced though.

didn't royce move to the states at like 17 or 18 years old? was he really fighting challenge matches in brazil before this to have lost so many times as you mentioned?

I dont think that the Gracie's are in any way scared of Gene Lebell. In Grappling or NHB any Gracie thats a Black Belt could take Lebell,I'm not hating on him or anything, but that story was probably a fake.Oh,pretty much anything that you read in Black Belt is like watching Jerry Springer.

So what publications are reliable in your opinion. I guess all of the writers on the Black Belt staff are fakes. Please elaborate on your comment about Black Belt being full of lies, so maybe the story was a fake after all it was in a colunm about BJJ written by one of the BJJ gods themselves. and the writer just happened to be a Gracie. I guess they would have to lie to save face. I will research the blackbelt database and see if I can find the article. If I can find it I will post.

Pardoel started Judo training at age 4. He lost in 1:31 to Gracie by Gi choke.
