3-Again I mean no disrespect towards him as a person but what I saw in that vid in the way of his victories he was a being a jerk pure and simple. If they tap they tap and you win, there is no reason to hurt the person unduly.

1 That fight is 1.5 hrs long and Saka didnt do anything but land a couple kicks when Royce was down and broke Royces ankle or shin, hardly toying with him. If he was "toying", he could have submitted Royce via a hold.

    2. Royce could still compete with anyone in the UFC. He doesnt fight in in anymore BECAUSE OF THE TIME LIMITS !!!. If they lifted the rules so there was no time limit, like Pride lets him do, he would be in there "toying" with the top guys. Ken Shamrock was hardly a "brawler" he had a solid ground game even then.

to address the second point you made

So because they wont change the rules for him he wont compete? Is that what your saying, cause if it is, it sorta doesn't say much for his ability. No other fighter needs the rules changed so that they can fight.

My opinion has always been and will always be that Saku outclassed royce. I mean Royce's corner threw in the towel, that usually means a sort of one sided fight. That is the most devastating loss is it not? For someone to have to quit of his own will. Saku must have been doing something well if he didn't want to continue.

5 minute rounds make it tough for semi-equal fighters to finish each other, ala Diaz and Sanchez. No time limit in that fight and he with the best technique wins, not who the judges think won.
I guess you missed Royce vs Dan Severn, lucky there wasnt 5 minute rounds in that fight, or the 'best fighter' of the two would have won.

So if Royces corner threw in the towel, how is that him "quitting on his own will"????? ROyce didnt quit, his corner thought it best for him not to fight with a broken ankle, Royce would die before he would tap out, same with most Gracies in a MMA event

Because they won't change the rules? More like because they changed the rules and won't change them back. Originally UFC had no time limits.

When UFC first began it was more like a martial arts movie plot: Bring together martial artists from various styles and see who comes out victorious. Now, it has evolved into a full on sport like boxing and vale tudo. It's now far from a no-holds-barred blood sport type event. There's time limits, special rules about what you can and can't do, advertising, endorsements, etc, etc.

So don't knock Royce. If he doesn't want to be involved in something like that, I can respect his opinion. If someone challenged him to a boxing match and he declined, would it be any different? He's not a boxer, and you know what...maybe he's not a sport fighter either. Maybe he's just a straight up fighter. If he's not allowed to be himself and use his own style and strategy and is forced to be handicapped by arbitrary rules, then why should he bother?

                Thank you...

Royce may not win the Mundials or UFC Championship, but go back to the original rules of NHB and I gaurantee he kicks some serious ass.

If you watch when they threw in the towel it was between rounds. Royce was sitting on a stool with a towel over his head. He quit of his own free will.

Guys come on, Royce was and is a talented man. What he did for his sport can be compared to what bruce did for kung fu in America. But he is just a man, everyone has argued the fact for bruce before that he wasn't as great as everyone says. He just was the most popular person for that time. Same goes for royce, he is a great grappler but a grappler is all he is. Everyone in the UFC now is a well rounded fighter, they have knockout punches and talent on the ground. That is why I say he wouldn't do as well in a UFC of today.

I mean come on akebono??? The guy is just fat. No wonder royce won. He has 10 times more mobility and is one of the forefront men of grappling. And akebono? He was a sumo wrestler turned pride fighter. He was a just another bob sapp publicity stunt.

Again I say I give royce props for his grappling ability and his influence on the BJJ world. There might not have even been a BJJ world if it wasn't for him. But face facts, he was a fighter for his time. Like every fighter that comes and goes, he won some matches but then people learned from him and started beating him.

Take any UFC champ of the past, Tito for example. Everyone thought he was unstoppable, he was a good wrestler who could keep you on the ground and fire heavy shots untill you were done. But then someone started figuring out what could beat him and they did.

Anyway this whole argument started with me saying Royce was a jerk due to the fact he was hurting people unduly after he won fights. No one has said anything to disprove the point so I would guess that some of you agree with me. If not then please put up some valid arguments against my point.

                          aaahh great memories!

With his outstanding performances he single handedly revolutionised unarmed combat.
It is also important to remember that when he won those Ufc finals he had had all his fights on that day!
Unlike now when they just have one fight and thats it.
He fougt one after another and without time limits for the rounds as per now days.

He was truely an inspiration to not only me but to the rest of the martial arts world!

                          A living legend.

Some people have heroes like Bruce Lee, who are unproven on a world stage.
Others have heroes who are proven on a world stage - Royce we salue you !

Royce is a great fighter and a legend no doubt....but why dose he get special treatment....making up his own rules for fights so it gives him an advantage.Royce can and will compete with high level guys....but he can not compete with the top of the food chain.Guys like Franklin...Hughes...Arlovski...Shogun...Wandy...Arona...lil Nog....Hendo and so on Gracies recently have not had any success in MMA....only Royce has a good winning record....Renzo faces top comp and loses all the time...but he steeped up and showed what he had...no shame in that.

By the time everyone stepped up, Royce and Renzo had already aged pretty well. These guys have been fighting since their teens... Just because they aren't winning anymore doesn't say anything, except that their prime is over. The same can be said of anyone...

The younger Gracies are on the rise too, so don't discount them... I'm not a Gracie lover, I just give credit where it's due... People are talking as though it's 1992... C'mon, ofcourse Royce would be at a disadvantage against today's fighters, but I wouldn't count him out of any contest. He's like the George Foreman of MMA.
