            For the non-Texans:

            (a) A person commits an offense if he intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly carries on or about his person a handgun, illegal knife (illegal knife" means a knife with a blade over five and one-half inches; hand instrument designed to cut or stab another by being thrown; dagger, including but not limited to a dirk, stilletto, and poniard; bowie knife; sword; or spear), or club.

            (B) in compliance with policies and procedures adopted by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice regarding the possession of a weapon by an officer while on duty;

            (3) community supervision and corrections department officers appointed or employed under Section 76.004, Government Code, and neither section prohibits an officer from carrying a weapon in this state if the officer is:

I think I might know this one.
"Why do so many classical jujutsu techniques focus on defenses against wrist grabs? "
Is it because they used to carry swords, so they would grab their wrist to prevent them from pulling out the sword?

              • #8
Estrangulo you are correct. I used to wonder why JJJ had so many darn techniques regarding wrist grabs. I don't ever recall anyone grabbing me like that in a fight or even seeing it happen.

If you think about it in the context of preventing a sword draw or disarming a swordsman or getting your hand loose to swing your sword, they kinda make sense.

Of course the short knives we carry today change the whole game. I guess nowadays something like escrima or kali would address that situation best. Those arts are on my list for the coming years, especially when I get older.

I get away with carrying a gun under the "traveling" exception. I need to get a concealed carry permit. I just never seem to get around to taking the class.

Oddly, in Texas if you have a concealed carry permit it is a violation to NOT have your weapon concealed. Conversly, if you DON'T have a CCW permit it is a violation if you DO have it concealed. Even under the seat or in your glovebox.

I usually carry mine wedged between the driver's seat and center console. When I've gotten pulled over for speeding I just tossed it into the back seat directly behind me.

That way, it's not concealed, and the cop knows I can't get to it while he's talking to me at my window. They make me get out of the car and we stand in the grass while he writes me the ticket.

This seems to work well. Twice, I have seen state troopers notice it laying there and they didn't even ackowledge it.

Once a small-town city cop (Alto, TX) gave me some smart-assed remarks about it. Then he hand-cuffed me and got it out and played with it. But when he figured out I knew the law and was obviously clean-cut enough to afford an attorney, he quit hassling me about it and wrote out my ticket.

Incidently, the Alto cop later got fired for literally beating people half to death for no reason. I had a friend who lived right next to US 69. He used to stop people at night in front of my friend's house. They watched him do it several times in the 8 months he worked there.

Alto only has two cops. Always new guys. Their hiring process for peace officers is somewhat lacking.

John, actually concealed or not doesn't really matter when you are traveling as long as it's not on your body when you walk into the 7-11 for a slurpie. You can put it under the seat or in the glove compartment. Just make sure you tell the officer about it whenever they profile you as a drug carrier and search your car.

Of course you can carry a rifle or shotgun in the car legally, that makes alot of sense dont it? Dont carry that Raven .25 but the AR-15 and Remington 1100 are ok.

                              fascistfury,

                              A normal question? No insults?

Texas criminal law does not make a distinction for a trained fighter. Assault and self defense applies the same no matter who you are. However, Civil law (like lawsuits) can bring up all kinds of things so that is where you will get screwed.

"Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, this man is a trained killer that used the deadly art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The very same style used in the caged Extreme deathmatches that play on pay-for-view TV. He had the moral obligation to inform my client of his deadly skills before he violently broke my client's arm in three places. After all my client is only a disadvantaged youth that approached the defendant and harmlessly asked for some spare change.
