See what I mean? It's one thing to e-flirt a little in the right threads, but the ladies won't stay around if they can't be treated like martial artists the rest of the time.

          .
Cakegirl posted today, I believe? She posted last week too.

Polegirl has moved on to better things, as I've discovered (ask Cake for details).

Missteak - haven't heard from her, but she trains w Cyclops-Tim.

I think we do a pretty good job of keeping things in the PG-13 range here at defend.net.

Compared to other MMA-SD forums like bullshido and sherdog, I'd say defend.net is probably the most family oriented.

          Still, your points are taken.

Update - It's late, but the petition was removed from the site because of database conflicts.

I read something Debi Purcell wrote about this, and she said it was kind of a lose-lose situation for the guy. If he wins, well duh he was supposed to, and if he loses, he lost to a girl!

I fully support serious women's MMA...but, unfortunately, a great many of the productions that have been put on have set it up as sort of an exploitative side-show, or as something to scoff at.
We need more world class female fighters. I used to train with a few, and I hold to the statement that these women are just as serious (perhaps more so) in their training and their technique is just as crisp as any of the male athletes.

As for co-ed fighting...so long as it's in the same weight class...I see only a few problems. 1) don't take this the wrong way, but breasts are (so I've heard) very sensitive, and therefore it's conceivable you could inflict more pain on a female opponent. *Nong Tum Prinya actually decided to quit fighting after a guy kneed him/her in the boob in his/her comeback fight after his/her gender reassignment surgery.
                        2) stength considerations. men naturally have more muscular forms than women. The best example of this I can think of is the fight between Lucia Rijker and some Thai dude who just wailed on her. Her form was probably on par with his, and I'm positive that if she had different musculature, she might have performed better.
and 3) Practical social-cultural implications of co-ed fights. I don't know if any sanctioning body in the US would allow two serious opposite gender MMA fighters to compete, simply based on the backlash that would follow. Men hitting women (in this case I find this unfortunate, otherwise I'm all for this imperative) is frowned upon in our society and not well tolerated, in any context.

So...I say...wear chest guards if you gots 'em, make sure the fights are pretty equally matched up as far as body shape, reach, height, and weight...and try and overcome the social squeamishness about co-ed fighting.

That being said, I would gladly try and do my best against a competent female opponent. One, it's the best way to show them respect, and two...not trying to perform at your best is a good way to end up being carried out of the ring wearing your ass as a hat.

Well said, Garland. One of my training partners used to train with Molly Helsel (my hero!) and he said he was a bit hesitant at first until she knocked him upside the head.

A couple weeks ago I had a chance to spar with a couple girls that are competive kick boxers. If I hadn't been working hard and taking it seriously I'd have gotten my ass kicked all over the place. Women like that are rare, but they do exist and they rock. I'll add that the times that I've gone to see professional boxing matches the womens' fights were some of the best on the cards. Lots of times in boxing even though it's a legit fight one fighter has the other blatantly out-classed; it's a match between The Favorite and The Opponent. Not in the womens' bouts though, it's always been two well-matched fighters slugging it out- the way it should be.

I have a friend who's a kickass Thai boxer and has a black belt in BJJ, and her instructor stopped letting her spar against other women, because the women would always quit afterwards. She only spars against guys and sometimes guys that vastly outweigh her. She definitely holds her own, but the only time she rubs it in is when the guys are being jerks to begin with, like this most recent guy she sparred...he INSISTED on sparring her and was being a jerk about it, and after she beat his a** she politely (and quietly) let him know that if he's going to challenge a woman, he may want to keeps his arms up.
