I agree that WWII combatives “work.” I also agree with the Fairbairn/Applegate/Sykes school of thought on using a few simple techniques that can be applied in all sorts of situations. The problem with these techniques is the same as their purpose–they are designed and do work in real, life or death combat. It is important to learn a lessor degree of force, such as open palm boxing skills and BJJ for situations where less than lethal force should be used. Also, even Applegate and Fairbairn espoused the value of Jiu-jitsu. The problem they had with JJ was that it takes too long to learn and can be overcome by the use of lethal blows. Even pre-WWII Judo/Jiu-jitsu recognized this. You’ll notice that Atemi Waza are very similar to WWII combatives. So, this is all to say that you should learn how to roll around on the ground. You can visualize using Atemi Waza when you roll for the time when you might need it. Obviously, you can’t practice Atemi Waza.

bjj can't just be OVERCOME by lethal blows. The grappler who's experience on the ground is ALWAYS in a better position to use the weapon or gouge eyes or to attack the groin while on the ground.

Fedor is awesome, but he hasnt fought at all this year and only twice in 2005. But he will destroy Coleman at Real Deal this october.

Are you trying to insinuate that Randy is not a top notch fighter? If you are, you must be outa your mind. Dan severn is pretty damn good of a fighter for his age, and for the stuff he learned late in life. He did beat Forrest Griffin and a bunch of other top names.

Tito is not even close to being the best. He would get KTFO by Chuck, defeated or possibly KO/TKO'd or submitted by Babalu. And Forrest Griffin almost beat him too. Wanderlei Silva would beat Tito, no doubt in my mind. Shogun, Arona, Minotoro and Overeem would wipe the floor with Ortiz, for sure, if you disagree then youre wrong. Its seems like Ortiz just takes people down, cant even pass guard, and elbows the Ok fighters he's fought from within their guard.

His ground and pound isnt even great, he does it with elbows! And elbows are easy and the only damage they really do is cause cuts and make it seem like the fighter on bottom is getting really hurt. Now, elbows from mount, side mount, or even half guard are great. But elbows from within guard = stalling and lay and pray. Plus, Fedor and Mirko dont need to use elbows.
