Back on the subject....
I tend to lean toward the clinch as well on this. Having a strong Muay Thai background, I tend to have a higher comfort level in the clinch. I am new to MMA, so the clinch now is a different world for me, but all the neck wrestling in Muay Thai helped a lot. As mentioned earlier though, it is hard to keep from going to the ground, at least for me, and my BJJ stuff is pretty much all defensive since I am a beginner. So, I wish I had the superior clinch game to help me stay up and strike.
Yep.

Imagine how effective you would be against someone who knows armbars, or someone who knows leg locks. When the fight starts standing.
Your good at the clinch, and the other guy wants to get you to the ground for his armbars or leg locks. You clinch as he tries to "pull" you down, he doesnt have takedowns, cause hes really only good at armbars.
Clinch grappling, you can pitch him on the ground if you want, but theres no way hes getting you down. Clinch striking, this is where you kill him, your grappling keeps it where you want it, your striking finishes it.
The clinch is a whole range of fighting, while all the other options are just PARTS of a range.

Agreed.
More specific, I think in my case, the "range" ( and you are right in the fact that the clinch in MT is considered a range) in which is the clinch is utilized is where I tend to have the best control during the fight. Usually, in MT, I am very agressive in the clinch....tight elbows, always kneeing or punching, and I have an uncanny ability to keep my opponent of balance. (As long as there is no great gap in skill level.) For the MMA aspect, I find that the basics are somewhat different. Having to worry about the takedown, I feel I cannot use the knees as effectively, nor can I create space at will. And, as you stated before, there are a multitude of standing submissions and other weapons from the clinch.............
MMA is a tough sport to work with. I had always thought that MT was it. Then I tried grappling, and was shocked. But, the two styles independent of each other are limited............but combined.....
