GRAPPLING FOR SELF DEFENSE NOT SPORT

it depends on the nature of the fight...
if the reason for the fight were purely self-defensive, then if I got top I would just take off running... if I were on the bottom I would open up my guard, try to sweep the opponent while defending the strikes, and try to get back to my feet so i could run...
all the choke, armlock, etc. i would only use if i were defending someone else and had to finish the opponent because they wouldn't be able to escape, or if i were in an ego situation (not saying ego fights--for example with someone who took your girl or something--are justified, we should stay away from those... its just one of the only conceivable times i would use subs.)
as for multiple opponents, i've fought in multiple opponent fights and trust me--you don't want to go there!
there is no conceivable defense to multiple attackers except to run or use a weapon, all the fancy ninja sh-t they teach in some martial arts do not work in real fights against multiple attackers who have any athletic ability. Your bjj will help, because you won't give your back and might keep a good base etc., but still, you're going to take a beating because they will get a takedown and from there be ready to eat fists! If people with decent athletic ability can takedown martial artists without ground experience, then two people will do it easily...

Ratobranco is a smart man, he brought up a great point about multiple assailants. I once got into a fight with two guys, and down to the ground it went. I didn't try to take it there, but even trying to zone, use footwork, etc still is difficult. It only takes one second for your focus to shift to one guy, and another soon has a hold of you. It was only my grappling base that saved me here, as I ended up on top of the guy. The other was hitting, and trying to get my hands behind me from a standing position. And I was able to get back to my feet only because I was on top, and had a little luck on my side.
The other self-defense situation was a fight in a work-place that he forum knows about. It was rather recent, but not that big of a deal. All I used here was a takedown, a wrestling breakdown, pin, mount and threatened pummeling.
But again, Rato is right. It depends on the fight. Personally if I have to fight 3-6 guys I bet I will lose if I don't get the hell out of there
And it doesn't matter if you are a stand up fighter. You can't fight that many people no matter who you are. Just reality.
Take care,
Ryu

For me, it has been standing grappling (from wrestling, bjj, and judo) that was best for me in self-defense. I've never been in a full-out street fight, but I've been in a couple situations where I think my grappling ability on my feet discouraged some aggressive individuals from taking things farther when they tried to shove me or rough me around on the feet. In other words, grappling allowed me to stand up well when others tried to size up my stength/ability, and then they changed their minds about the confrontations. Standing grappling has also been a good skill for me in a couple of bar brawls and panic scenes that I was on the periphery of, which allowed me to stay on my feet and avoid the action, when I might have otherwise been pushed to the ground and probably stomped.
Remeber that grappling is not all about chokes and arm bars.

It has become very fashionable to criticize grappling arts for their shortcomings regarding multiple attacker situations.
Just mention BJJ to anyone even vaugely familiar with MA and they'll automatically shout in your face... "That stuff will get you killed because of multiple attackers!!! They ground is the last place you want to be in a real fight!!!".
I guess these people have seen too many Steven Segal movies.
Other than gang initiations, I've NEVER seen a 1on<1 fight were the 1 didn't get grabbed, held, or dragged to the ground.
I've been in two 1on<1 fights and both times the largest guy did the grabbing and the smaller one did the beating.
Which martial arts address Bearhug from behind escape, Rear naked choke from behind escape, headlock escapes, mount escapes?
Those are the one's I'd study for REAL self-defense.

many martial arts hav grappling techniques but ive found in real combat u tend to revert to things tht u have used over and over again so as to wat to practice i would suggest commenly open and easy to reach pressur points and simple locks such as a C-lock, S-lock, Arm-Bar, Chickenwing and such

To me effective street grappling needs to be quicker, and needs to emphisize dominant yet mobile positioning (if your on someones back, his buddies can just kick your face in). Street grappling would have to be agressive and brutal and be mixed with striking/dirty attacks (gouging, groin attacks, ect...). If I were in the street I would be going for a quick/simple throw to a dominant and mobile position to a quick/simple submission.
For instance:
Osoto-gari > Knee on belly > Strait armbar (assuming I was using only grappling in this instance).
Obviously in the street it isn't logical to pull guard or dive for a flying kneebar.

grappling is awesome for self defense. it teaches you to be calm, and how to escape from all the worst positions, like mentioned above. it also plays in a important role in keeping people on their feet or keeping better positions. if you train in grappling, people arent going to be able to push you around. another benefit is that if you are a grappler and you fight somene who doesnt know any grappling, they will be completely at your mercy in the grappling range as they wont even know what you are doing to them.
and btw, i didnt even mention the attacks. all the attacks in grappling can do permanent damage to people if not kill them. they are all about breaking bones and seperating muscles from eachother, or choking and strangling techniques.
