  • bjj vs. wrestling

Okay, that deceptive title was just to get people's attention.

My question is, say I'm grappling someone who was a wrestler for a long time, and I've noticed that when the SHTF and he can't get something he's trying to do to work against my resistance, he'll immediately default to wrestling moves. Now remember this guy trains 3X/ week and I only train 1X/week and also he has all this wrestling experience. But I was thinking of this permaculture principle I really like, "The problem is the solution." How would I take advantage of his conditioned (wrestling-based) response?

If you know enough wrestling to anticipate his conditioned response, you could set up a feint that would cause him to respond in a direction you want him to go...

However once he responds to the anticipated move on your part, you then counter his counter move.

Of course, every person's response isn't necessarliy the same. It works best if you've grappled with this guy long enough to sense what he's going to do. If this is for a future match, you might want to have someone videotape this guy's matches to get a sense if he'll roll left or right after a particular move. This is the same sort of stuff coaches go over when they prepare their players against another team.

Thanks! I thought there might be specific moves that would help beat up wrestlers, but it sounds like you're saying it's an individual response.

Okay, so I should just observe for a while.

wrestlers are generally pretty easy to tap until they get the swing of things, they are usually a bit intense but easy enough. I just go for taking thier backs or working for the gaurd. When I sweep them, they turtle, and I sink in the choke.

how bout the triangle. some pure judokas and wrestlers are unfamiliar with the triangle choke and how to defend against it or escape.

They generally don't keep a good posture in guard, I know because I was one of them . Work from your guard and always watch what you're doing because they're usually fairly adept at taking your back.

              his back

A wrestler will not go to his back, unfortunatly he will probably be able to take you to yours so I would teach you one move, learn to sprawl, the rear naked choke is my favriot, I like to sprawl behind (just like in wrestling) throw legs and choke, it comes natural for a former wrestler & boxer because it is just like throwing a cross face only lower, also wrestlers are very good at Guillotine (sorry about spelling) chokes, you get one from a front head & arm, so watch for that.

Wrestlers, you gotta hand it to them for the flaming gay outfits they were, with those funny things that cover their sensitive ears, and the funny looking extra tights nuthuggers that cramp the testicles up into the stomach. Then they get all sweaty together, its a thing of beauty, I mean, if youre a san francisco treat.

"Pure" judokas know the triangle choke...the myth is that they don't practice it a lot. I think that is a bad misconception. I train 50/50 in stand-up and matwork. Maybe that's just me?

But yeah, the triangle choke is a good submission against wrestlers because they're not use to worrying about where their arms are. Catch them once or twice in it, and they start to get the idea.

Kinda like handin it to you for suckin some gracie nuts? Hey, at least we don't enjoy being on our backs with men on top of us righ? This is retarded.... wrestling is a grappling art, just as BJJ is, so why can't you repect both, if, you really consider yourself a grappler.
