Something i need to clear up...
BJ PENN did NOT gas. What? Yes he did, right? Wrong.
He seperated his rib in the second round while taking the Champs back. When the third started, he couldnt breath well and get enough oxygen to his brain. When people, fighters specifically, "gas out", its a gradual thing. Not an instant thing, like in the Prodigy's case.

Okay but when you seperate a rib you can still stand up...
When your gassed out, you cant... Bj couldn't stand after the fight.
Obviously a seperated rib had a part to play in him gassing out, but he did gas. Even if the reason is he seperated his rib, and gassed out trying to finish matt in the second, he was gassed.
Think about how much BJ was using his legs to keep, MATT FRICKING HUGHES, in that triangle... Think about how tiring thats gotta be, have you ever wrestled, how tired do you think his legs got defending all those takedowns. Hughes worked on one leg, he tried for the single on the same leg, he kicked BJ in the same leg, and BJ couldnt stand after the fight.
Obviously the rib played a huge part, but BJ was done, trying to finish Hughes killed him, and he was gonna gas out from all the work Hughes was doing with the takedowns.

That all makes sense, but I gotta say that trying to finish a takedown is at least as tiring as defending (I would say more so, but it may vary according to the individual), so it comes back to who was the better prepared fighter that night.

Do you think Hughes has problems with that type of conditioning. I dont think he does. My judo instructor (also an ex college wrestler) can go forever standing grappling, but when he boxes he gasses. Does that mean he's not in shape, no, its just relaxation and that, as I'm sure you probably know.
I agree trying for takedowns is tiring, but I would say Matt Hughes is used to it, and obviously Hughes didnt look tired at all.

He couldnt stand 'after' the fight because Hughes just reigned down like 30 unanswered blows to Penn's fat melon. Penn said on his website that even when Hughes was pounding him that he (Penn) was still going to somehow win the fight. So the blows were effecting his rationale lol, but then again, what a sick bastard, he would fight to the death and never tap out, apparently.
As far as gassing trying to finish Hughes, thats the gamble sometimes, you might gas going for the sub. Same with losing position going for a move. Inthe end the guys that are more aggressive usually end up winning
Originally posted by Axon View Postalso, the choke penn had didn't look all that tight and I agree with Matt's comment that the arm bar looked much more dangerous. I think if Matt could have escaped the bar, he could have dropped Penn.
not in a million years could he "drop" Penn
