  • Poor Hygiene has pushed me away from BJJ

I was once an avid student of BJJ and Judo. Sometimes I'd go 6 times a week. I really enjoyed it. I suffered pulled muscles, sore ribs, hyperextended elbow, cranked knees, you name it. All was tolerable.

What I could not stand was dealing with the filthy beasts who'd come to train. Some people just would never wash their friggin Gi! Their street clothes were also filthy as can be, they were often coughing/looking pale (probably sick from poor hygiene). I'd usually make every effort avoid these people, but sometimes it'd be impossible if the instructor paired us off.

The instructor (who was a very clean guy himself) was always telling the class to wear shoes outside or in the bathroom, but some people just ignored him, and he didn't have eyes in the back of his head. I remember he'd even stop class sometimes to give very stern lessons in hygiene 101, but some pigs just wouldn't listen.

Bottom line is I eventually got some rashes from these pigs.. their dirty gi rubbing on my skin...

    and I had enough...

So I've been out for a while, and often thought of coming back to the sport.. but then I see from posts on these forums that this still goes one. One guy on MMA.TV forum just admitted that was grappling with open sores and had staph.

Good god, some of you people are friggin pigs and need to be shot.

Let me guess.. you're one of the dirtbags who never bathes or washes his gi? Or walks bare foot into the bathroom, takes a dump, and then walks right out without washing his hands, and asks to spar?

Try a different school, train privately with select training partners that do maintain their hygience.

If a guy stinks in class, strait up tell him, don't be disrespectful to your coach, but just be like, I am sorry coach but this guy smells horrible. I have done it, call attention to the problem just don't let it go. The embarassment might be enough to turn some of them around...

he;s just some big guy who thought he was tough, went into train, and got owned by some little white belt, was humiliated, and now cries like a bitch.

well if poor hygiene is the reason that you dont train, your problem has a pretty easy solution that has already been mentioned. you need to find a good rolling buddy, or couple good people you can trust and have a good roll with. this isnt just about hygiene either but has other benefits as well. having a good partner you can trust is great because it reduces the risk of being injured by some noob trying his hardest to force a submission or spazzing out and doing something dumb. and also, it will spare you from hindering your training or getting injured by pairing up with people who are more concerned about feeding their ego than training and learning.

but if you are indeed a troll, you should just head over to the matt blake threads in open access, you will find yourself more at home over there.

This does bring to mind the last time I trained Muay Thai ... you know ... the tough, strenuous martial art that may require just a little exertion?

We were doing drills that our instructor had us repeat to hone our skills and I noticed my partner fairly cringing each time it was my turn. It was distracting as hell and made me self conscious since SHE was a girl.

Turns out, the fact that I was sweating seemed to freak her out. WTF????

You're SUPPOSED to sweat if you're really going at it like you're supposed to!!! My instructor who had been witnessing our practicing finally stepped in and worked with me while she(a competitive boxer) worked with another coach which I was thankful as hell for. Likely, she was too.

I could imagine generations of Thaiboxers spinnin in their graves as they looked down on how their art has "progressed". I guess it can sometimes be considered "white collar" thaiboxing.

*disclaimer* This is strictly an anecdotal entry akin to the topic we are discussing. My instructors are excellent. This incident was disconcerting and I mention it only cuz I'm interested in feedback. I'm sure this has happened to others before. I have no problem practicing with women, generally, but it was surpriseing as she supposedly should be used to "sweat" since she's a boxer and has more than a little experience practicing MT.

Ummm... smell or sweat is kind of beside the point. Especially when you're training stand up, which doesn't involve extremely close body conduct that can lead to the transmisison of rashes, fungus, and other unpleasant sheeit.

There was no smell; just sweat. That's the point I'm making. Wouldn't you have been put off by her cowering? I wanted to thaikick her out of the ring. I mean ... Jeez!

In Thailand where most often training scenarios feature fighters who literally look like they've been drug thru the Ocean due to the humidity and to a lesser extent, North Carolina where the humidity makes more than a few visitors stay inside for the duration of their visits, bitching about sweat while practicing MT is fukkin ridiculous.

I admit, had I realized I would be sweating to the point of distracting anyone I would have brought towels, wore long sleeves and excused myself to shower every 15 minutes but due to the fact I've lived in Okinawa, the Phillipines(both for under a year) and NC(my whole life), and have played sports or practiced various martial arts the whole time I was a bit surprised at her reaction.

Next time I go to practice intent on getting a good workout and pushing myself I will keep in mind that I might be working with someone different from myself and bring a change of clothes, towels, body spray, talcum powder, baby powder, soap, a portable self contained living shell(like the boy in the bubble ... y'all are too young to remember that) ... better yet, if I see I'm workin with someone like that I'll just pack up and leave.

It actually has played a part in me losing enthusiasm for training there again. Of course, I will continue since it's the best place to train in Charlotte but I probably will opt out of working with her in training anymore if I can without subjecting her to any embarassment or discomfort. It did bother me as you can see by this god-awfully long monologue about the incident. Sorry. Just discussing ....
