What are everyones opinions on eddie bravo's rubber gaurd system? Is it worth looking into?

It looks better than hugging the guy until he finally postures up and starts punching your face in.

      Rubber guard schmubber guard.

Rubber guard is just a flexible open-guard. Eddie Bravo has combined some pretty cool techniques but is it a "system" . . . I don't know but I'm damn sure that BJ Penn does the "rubber guard" better than Eddie ever thought possible.

Alright, that wasn't fair. In truth, I like Eddie's stuff and I own both of his books but I don't see anything he does as being as "revolutionary" as he thinks it is.

I dont really see the rubber gaurd as anything that special, just another form of the gaurd.

The second poster brought up the MMA aspects, but I'll look at the grappling aspects of it.

If its the best, or an extremely good gaurd, why has the X-Gaurd and its posterboy Marcelo been so dominant. (chalk one up for alliance jiu jitsu).

Where was the rubber gaurd when Eddie got SPANKED by Leo Viera.

(I realize this was after Eddie beat Royler, but if anyone thinks Eddie is better than Royler they are a fucking moron, a FUCKING moron.)

There are many different variations of gaurd, X, De La Riva, Rubber, etc.... It's worth looking into, but as said before, nothing revolutionary.

So in other words, "it looks like a sound technique, but here's some snide, cynical remarks"?

By the way, does the book offer much info on the rubber guard past what I've read in the magazines? It shows the position and some others, but it doesn't seem like there's much too it.

[1] The X-Guard was being performed by a guy named Ricardo Medina back when Marcello was still a white belt . . . (Chalk one up for MAchado Jiu-Jitsu )

[2] Not just Vera, but where was it against Royler. Eddie didn't go anywhere with it against Royler, he beat him with a straight up triangle, no rubberty schmugglty anything.

            [3] No f*ckin' doubt!

            Nick,

You'll want Mastering the Rubber Guard and yes it goes more into the details. There is some great information, its not my favorite but there is still some great information.

                DJ,
Did you take anything from the book that you actually use on a regular basis?

I personally love the rubberguard. Being a flexible person, I find that it is relatively easy to pull a rubberguard with no strain on my knees. I've managed to figure out numerous setups from rubberguard and find that it is a good tool to teach beginners on how important setting up moves are (as rubberguard is basically a setup into another move).

                    Honestly, no.

But I'm 6'5" and 350 pounds. And I knew going in that there wouldn't be too much for me but I collect Jiu-Jitsu books and even if I don't always enjoy Bravo's bravado (sorry, had to do it) I enjoy his books.

I use what is a crappy version of the rubber guard in my game with people who are good at posturing. Takes next to no energy to hold they cant just posture out of it. Only have few subs out of it though omaplata arm bar and gogo palata. Beginners hate it as they cant use thier basic escapes to get out of it. They generally have to wait till i let them out

The Rubber Guard is great to use...so is all the other setups its just another tool to add into your arsenal...now if you ACTUALLY read it not just fling through the pages, Eddie sets it up as a SYSTEM like some mentioned before.Basically you break the guys posture down and go into mission control thats the game plan....from there you look to see whats open...now when you go for a specific move there are usually 2-4 techniques DEPENDING on how the opponents moves to counter it...as well as different Guard types off of mission control such as the New York the London and the Chill Dog.Now if you read it properly and actually see what hes trying to accomplish you see that the Rubber Guard is actually many many many different types of Guards and sweeps/submissions put together so it LINKS UP with what you are trying to acomplish...now for those of you who are saying its not anything special...maybe its because you dont appericiate Eddie because of his character or his Record or something like that...or maybe because your too big and heavy to do it such as cold fusion but dont dismiss what was put together just because your too closed minded to understand what is trying to be accomplished.Eddie NEVER claimed to be the best there was...what he was trying to do was put together a SYSTEMATIC approach to Guard work spec. for No-Gi and MMA.
