  • Holy F*ck, Just Got My Brown Belt!!!

What an incredible journey this has been! I eat, breathe, live, and Die Jiu-Jitsu to the point that my wife has to occasionally force a day off and even then I still can't stop thinking about Jiu-Jitsu. My wife comes down stairs late at night and sees me sitting in front of my computer monitor and thinks I'm watching porn . . . HELL NO! I just got Saulo's new set and I'm not going to bed until I finish it! DAMMIT!

Two other guys got their brown belts tonight at our school. Dave Johnson, who has been training for something like 14 years, and Brandon Ruiz, who has won the Pancrase Sub-grappling tournament twice and is leaving Monday to compete in Greco tournaments in Greece and Serbia . . . KICK SOME ASS BRANDON!!!!!

In case there's a question about it, my instructor is Jeff Kunze. Jeff got his black from Rigan Machado in 2003.

If anyone is interested I'll eventually put the pictures up on the school site at http://www.slcbjj.com and I'll do some sort of a write up on my combat sports site Maximumg.com ( http://www.maximumg.com) Check out Maximumg.com whether you want to read my write up (probably won't be posted for a week or so) or not, I recently posted a great interview with Mario Correa that many of you might enjoy.

Anyway, I apologize for babbling . . . I'm just a little excited right now. For a 38 year old guy with a bad back, two bad knees, gimpy shoulder and a face that's been bashed around so much that even my wife claims I resemble Shrek . . . I'm feeling pretty f*ckin' good right now.

    Take care guys

That's great news - I think it's difficult for guys outside of BJJ to realise how much that means & how much sweat & tears it takes to get there. Congrats DJCF - that belt is a prize well earnt.

Congrats my friend! With old age comes great wisdom...and a high ranking belt to boot ! Sadly, not many people outside of this sport will know how meaningful that is, or how many droplets of blood, sweat, and tears you put on the mat. You paid your dues and got what you deserve in return. Put that belt on and never take it off I'd say . Congrats again!

                Congratulations! That's an amazing accomplishment!

Go out there and tie some cocky blue belts up in knots!

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate it.

Again, I can?t tell you guys how incredibly blown away I am by all of this. I'm still riding that wave of an emotional high and I hope I can transform it into some seriously good training. We have a small group of guys but I consider every one of them to be friends and when your training with nothing but friends then it all just seems to go a little smoother. No egos, no macho horse-shit, just great grappling. I honestly hope that every one of you have a crew to train with that are as cool as the guys I roll with.

And I know I haven't won an academy award but this is a HUGE deal to me and something that I never expected to achieve so I have to say thanks to Jeff, my instructor, for all of the time he's put into my game and the friend that he has become. Thanks to Ricardo "ICA" Medina for being the architect of the majority of my bottom game. And thanks to Rigan Machado for showing me that Jiu-Jitsu really can be a creative form of self-expression. And, most importantly, thanks to my wife for allowing me to pursue my Jiu-Jitsu addiction.

Thanks again everyone . . . I'll try to shut up for awhile.

Is this the last belt before black? Congrats. Enjoy the journey you will be stuck at Brown for a while. Brown belts get BIG TIME respect.
