  • No teens practice BJJ?

    Hey guys,

I'm new to these forums and I have a question about teens in BJJ. I'm 17 years old and it seems to me that BJJ (and a lot of grappling arts in general) are dominated by people in their late 20's and older. Even on forums like these, I usually don't find anyone my age that trains in BJJ. I've practiced it for about six months now and really enjoy it, but I'm beginning to wonder if there are more people my age out there that enjoy BJJ too. I train at a BJJ place in Tampa, but with people much older than I am. Is there a reason for this? And are there any teens here that practice BJJ too?

    Thanks,
    Jeff

I'm actually residing in Tallahassee, not too far from where you are. There are people around your age who train, you just gotta look in the right places. Good way to do it is compete in a NAGA tournament or something.

I wish I had started BJJ when I was 17!! It may seem like a long way off, but if you train hard you'll be a black belt by the time you hit your mid-late twenties.

      Welcome to the forum!

        Hello Jeff and welcome aboard.

My son started training Jiu-jitsu (BJJ/GJJ) when he was 13. He was the youngest student in the academy at the time. Most of the kids there were in their late teens early twenties.

enjoy your training and don't worry about the age thing too much. We all tap out no matter how old we get.

seriously man the less the better. going to school in new york is great aside from all the big egoes.....i go to f.i.t witch is mainly a fashion school. i go for illustration so i draw naked women, naturally....but while wondering the streets theres alot of idiots out and about. the less that know how to kick my ass the better. especially at bars, you have all those tools that think they can rip a phone book in half.
i say train with older people they not only give you a hell of a work out, you constantly want to prove to them that you are good. that way when you do reach that point they say nice job and its more satisfying, wheres other teens think they are better than you and try to cut you down anyway they can.

If you're willing to drive down sometime, go to st. augustine. There's a guy there that fights for King of The Cage who kicks some serious ass. Look the man up, his name's John Mahlow.

There are more men in their 20s and 30s in my school, but that said, there are more teenage boys in my school than there are women of any age.
