  • Roundhouse to the body keeps getting blocked with elbow

In my full contact karate class we are allowed to block with elbows and have hits to the head with gloves. My roundhouse to the body keeps getting blocked with the elbow and it hurts bad. Any tips to help me. I thinking I should kick higher so I hit the shoulder area or kick when my sparring partner does not have his elbows tucked in. I love throwing this kick but I am having problems with this one guy.

Maybe try setting him up? Throw a few kicks to the body to get him used to drop that hand a bit to block with his elbow. Then fake a body kick and go straight for the head. At that point, whether or not the kick actually lands flush or not, will keep him guessing. So just mix in some head kicks with your body kicks and I think you should be set.

Anybody with more striking experience care to comment?

Yep the legs will get hard in time and that wont bother you.

You can try this combination to, use axe kick whit left leg to break his guard and then kick round house kick whit right. It works, but dont do it often cuz it could pay it back whit a nice punch.

swing it in from the side and land it on his arm muscles.

          TOO MUCH DRAMA! lol

when you throw a kick to the body, it's lands clean when your appointment is throwing a strike

          example..

he jabs with this left ... you throw a left kick...

throw a kick with his hands up, guard up, elbows by his ribs and side.. you're gonna kick his elbows.. but it happens.. something you have to deal with..

Punish his blocking elbow by blasting a really hard roundhouse kick.

                How about just kicking lower?

arm is a valid target, swing it in from the side and and you can deaden the arm.
Leg is a target, so is the arm.
just need to make sure it comes in from the side.

Thanks guys I took your advice and it really helped me out. I knocked that elbow block guy out with a axe kick to the head. I mixed things up a lot and landed some big shots.

Okay kick with all your fucking heart. think about it he can only drop the elbows so hard... so try to angle your kick into his body. So dont kick from an even pt. angle them up words. And when he drops his elbow kick him right in his fucking ribs. Remember your foot will be going towards his elbow so it should go right through it.

Try going for a zigzag approach. Step across with the leg you're not kicking with, and then throw the kick more directly at the belly rather than the ribcage.

And watch yourself kicking in the mirror, to see if you're telegraphing.

                          And everything eXcessiveForce said.

                            hello,

all good ideas. still, if this has been happening consistently, your mechanics are all wrong. you aren't pivoting your planted foot enough and your ranging/footwork is all wrong as well. (note: didn't even have to look at you to know this). VERY common problem.

take some privates with a good instructor and learn the proper mechanics of "teep". REALLY learn the "teep". the PRINCIPLES you learn here will apply to everything else you do.

next, apply the mechanical principles to your kicks. it should end up working a lot more smoothly for you. even a lot of guys who have "been doing it" for several years need to do this.

as you gain experience you will become better with combinations that will open up opportunities for some good kicking. and you won't smash up your limbs on thier elbow tips.

                            thanks
