  • Trapping legal in MMA?

Not sure if this is technically trapping, but is it legal to strike the opponent if you manage to tie up or get a hold of their hand, wrist, or arm? If you were to get a whizzer on their right arm with your left arm, are you allowed to just drop hits on them with your free hand or elbow? What about grabbing the wrist while standing?

Along the same thread, what if you grabbed their wrist and dropped elbows on their forearm, upper arm, or shoulder? I guess I'd call it limb destruction. Is that legal?

Except for foot stomping, I've never really seen stuff like that done. I'd consider these cheap moves but I'm curious if you're allowed to use them.

I'm pretty damn sure that you're allowed to do that. It's basically classified under "dirty boxing" when you tie up and start hitting each other. Kicking directly on the knee join I'm not too sure about so hopefully one of the other members will tell you about that. Foot stomping, is legal. A lot of fighters do that when they tie up to get their opponent into a position they want them to be.

Dangerous moves like spinal attacks, throat attacks or eye attacks are not allowed. Air pipe chokes are not allowed. Destruction moves are hard too pull off in MMA but I do not think they are allowed either or you would be breaking a bone on purpose. Stomps were allowed in Pride but not now. People would get their head stomped or kicked hard on the ground and it caused too many injuries I think foot stomps are still allowed in UFC not sure about pride. There are many moves not done in MMA because they are too dangerous.

Kicking to any joint = technically illegal and also very, very difficult to prevent or judge as being performed with malicious intent during the fight. A straight Jeet-tek type kick to the knee cap would probably get you busted but the rule itself was put in place along with the "no nerve strikes" rule to satisfy the political opponents of MMA.

Striking directly to the spine is illegal if the strike itself does not curve. It is the angle of the attack that makes it illegal; however, along with the whole kicking to the joint thing it is difficult for many referees to judge the exact path your strike travels so it is largely a good idea to stay away from spinal strikes.

Other types of spinal attacks; like neck cranks, spinal locks etc are perfectly legal.

Your right about the eyes, striking them are illegal. Technically, inserting anything into any orrifice is illegal and the orbital sockets are orifi (sorry, not sure what the plural for orifice is),

Wind (air pipe) chokes and blood chokes are both legal under the unified rules.

Personally, I'm glad the head stomping of PrideFC is gone. I'd like to see elbows on the ground and and foot stomping go as well. However, I do want to see Mark Hunt's flying atomic butt drop grace the Octagon.
