hahah yeah lol probably. but yeah i think boxing.

The martial arts community is split in two isnt it between the traditional and the athletic combat sports side.
The argument that rages is if the sports side is actually more effective than the traditional side even when the rules are removed. in my opinion, from having spent years on both sides, id say the sports side in general is miles ahead.

The most looked down upon from the traditional side is boxing. being the most limited (in appearance).
However if i had to take someone and give them one thing that would give them the best self defense for the street, it would be boxing. Even over thai boxing as at the lower levels most boxers will beat thai boxers in a fight as thai takes longer to adapt to.
So in a way its the best self defense system out there.

Moving on to it being underrated. The MMA community are too quick to just give boxing a passing look. I think adding better boxing is where MMA is lacking in general. In thai boxing its often not at a high enough standard in my opinion and that as stated before that at lower levels boxers will give thai boxers a really hard time.

Judo.....

While post war (sporterized) judo is admittedly weak (next to the old Kodokan Judo that was spread around the globe early last century and influenced many nations sports, war training and police forces). You can find versions of Judo techniques in almost every martial art today.

It was the pinnacle self defense art until the US occupation of Japan... After that Judo became a shadow of what it once was.

If you look close, Judo is everywhere.

I think Boxing has enough respect these days to not be considered under-rated, afterall almost any fighter in a prefight interview is always talking about "throwing leather" and how his hands will knock the other guy out because he's been working on his boxing.

My vote goes to Judo. Judo goes so well with BJJ that I feel they should try to combine it into one sport.

I'm tempted to say Judo as well, because it is often viewed and presented as a kid's program at the YMCA or local community centre, wrestling to a lesser extent in the same way (because people do it in highschool)...but I went with Savate because so few people even know that it exists. Watching an Assault level comp can give the impression of a game of tag, but Savate fighters have great footwork and punishing kicks (with shoes).

I was also tempted to say Judo, but like the guy above me, i chose Savate. It really is sort of uknown in the general public. And it's a great art.
