  • 4th in Recent Judo Tourny

Hey guys, just thought I'd do a little update on my current training.

For the past 10 months I've been cross-training in some Judo. 2 moves that work really well for me have been the Sode-Tsuri-Komi-Goshi and Uchi-Mata. I've been working hard my Uchi-Mata and I finally struck an epiphany with this move a couple days before the tournament so I was quite happy.

This recent tournament was my third tournament and was quite a doozy. This is usually a small tournament but to my surprise there were about 12-13 people in my weight class. I had a total of 5 matches coming up to 3-2, which puts me in 4th place.

    1st match
I head out there, establish my grips and start hitting footsweeps. I saw an opening so I went in for Uchi-Mata but there was a little bit of space in between us so he wasn't going over. I switched it immediately to Kouchi-Gari and took him backwards for an Ippon.

    2nd match
I was quite proud of this match because my "rival" lost to this guy twice. The match started and I shut down his lapel grips and began to pull him around the mat. He tried to reach for a lapel so I spun into a Sode-Tsuri-Komi-Goshi and it was amazing! I wasn't aware of it but from what I've heard I threw him so quick and so hard he actually spun 360 and landed back on his knees. I tossed him hard and the crowds were cheering so I figured I'd gotten the Ippon. I got up and went back to the starting line only to realize I didn't get a score. The ref restarted us and I quickly went in and tried for Uchi-Mata. He fell but it wasn't for a full point so I immediately switched to side mount (yoko-shiho) and pinned him for the Ippon.

    3rd Match
This match was kind of iffy with the ref calls. The guy tried to pick my leg and I tried to counter with Uchi-Mata. He re-countered by running hard into me. We hit the ground and I immediately spun and nailed an armbar. The refs gave him the ippon though because "i hit the mat first." My coaches had a fit about that but what's done is done.

    4th Match
Basically, we went in and fought hard and towards the end of the match we were both tied in score. I tried for a throw, we landed and I hit an armbar. He screamed so I let go. One ref called ippon but the 2 others disagreed and took it back. In the end he didn't give me the ippon or even my position back. We started standing again, and he tried a throw. We landed, he got no points, and I spun into an armbar from guard and this time I made sure he tapped before I let go.

    5th match
I went against the same kid in the second match. We started off and got our grips. I shut down his lapel grip and in the process he switched and went for an Uchi-Mata-Makikomi and caught me in an ippon. I wasn't too happy about that.

    -----

Well that's the long and short of it for those who've actually read through the whole thing. Keep training hard and stay safe!

Sweet! Progress is awesome buddy! Laying up the combinations is an art to itself!

Savor your victories and learn from defeat!

You should be ready for rank soon? Do you get a new belt yet?

    (it has been a while...)

thanks, I've been a green belt for a bit but that's perfectly fine with me. i've trained nogi grappling for s long I don't really mind the belt colors. I mean, in the end it's not about what belt you wear but who walks off the mat with his hands raised .

sorry about the lack of capitalization, i'm trying out the defend.net mobile.

Cool... I'd rather be undergraded (and I am) Nobody at my old Judo club got a blackbelt until they could score Ippon on the resident 3rd dan...

I've seen promotions to brown at tourneys... Being DQ could be a good thing ...

Yea, I've seen those too, but I really don't agree with them. Black belts should have to pass a rigorous exam. Both written and physical. But who am I to argure with the Headmaster. LOL

It was fairly comon for dan grade tests to take all day when I was training.

                Teaching Kata is very technical...

At a minimum. And the randori is brutally done after total exhaustion.

I'd have to disagree. Like a friend of mine got promoted to blackbelt because he went to a tournament and had to compete 2 weight classes above him (178lbs). First match he gets a black belt and he straight up picks the guy up over his head and slams him down for ippon. I think there should be instances where people get promoted on the spot at tournaments.

Yea, that's a good example. A friend of mine got his 5th that way.
