  • More beginner BJJ (high %age subs)

    Hi there,

Ok I have attended a few more classes and finally don't feel ridiculously useless on the ground! (oeeeeeeeeeeiiy!)

I would appreciate it greatly if anyone could list some high percentage subs from the guard, half guard, and when on top, side control/ or in half guard.

Only because these are my current basic positions, and I know the kimura (from side control + guard) and am working on the triangle (from the guard), but a good friend who is a blue belt (he lives miles away so unfortuantely I don't train with him) says I need to focus on subs that work more of the time - he suggested to start with armbar and triangle, and work from there. (mainly because you can throw your legs up for a triangle, miss and switch to an armbar)

Just wondering if you guys had any thoughts or words of wisdom on the subject. Oh and obviously training more is on the cards - I just liek to watch some videos of stuff before I go to class so I have some ideas. How about guillotines, or are they only really worth doing when someone attempts a takedown?

    Thanks very much

Focus on the basic basic moves: keylock, kimura, armbar, triangle, hip heist sweep, scissor sweep, etc. These moves are relatively high percentage in that it's nothing too fancy and you're usually able to combo them so they flow together.

damn, I thought kimura was the same as a keylock. I need to do more research.

      Thanks

be patient and take your time getting the transitions down.

The locks and chokes will come in time. When you figure out the "kuzushi" (set up moves) and combination techniques to trick or trap your "uke" the arm locks, leg locks and strangle (spine lock) techniques will be the finish (hold). Techniques themselves are a relatively MINOR aspect of your training.

Work on getting the positional control...

For beginner BJJ/judo newaza (nod to Tant0) escapes and submission defense (i.e. tapping a lot) should be your first priority.

Your own experience will eventually tell you what your high-percentage submissions are. The only thing to do is more randori/rolling. It's all about mat time.

          Yeah. What Tant0 said.

thank you for the advice. I will (or try to) implement everything that was said at my next rolling session
