  • Just got finished sparring with a 7' foot guy.

I'm 5'9" 270 lbs. and he was 7'0" 330lbs.He was very enthusiastic about sparring and learning.

Damn, that guy had an awesome guard, hard as hell to pass, but I tapped him every time we rolled though. It was a bitch taking him to the ground, but I did it eventually with a double leg and a single leg trip.

We also did some kickboxing, which I whipped his ass in.His stand up wasn't very good, and he couldn't take a punch very well.I plan on helping him out on his stand up and ground fighting,he seemed eager to learn.

That has to be the tallest guy I've ever trained with, previously the tallest was 6'5".

I was just pumped from training,at least my post has something to do with MMA.Most of your idiotic ramblings have nothing to do with MMA what-so-ever.What are you here for?Seems as though you try and start arguements with every poster here.If you don't like my posts then just use the ignore feature and be done with it.

Robbie, how did you manage to exchange strikes when he had such reach on you?
Do you find his jabs frusterating?

He definitely had long legs and arms, but he didn't hit very hard.He was able to keep a distance for a little while, but I just kept landing low level roundhouse kicks to his thighs and waited for him to make a mistake, then I'd go in full force and throw some punches.I'm use to kickboxing taller opponents and all,so the stand up wasn't that hard. The hardest part of fighting him was while groundfighting in his guard.

admitting your mistakes is the first step towards recovery.

                            Hi,

I actually brought this topic up a couple months ago, but this is a good oportunity to bring it up again to get some more opinions.

                            So here is the Question:

If your ever have to get in a street fight with someone far taller than you are (i.e. they have a great reach advantage on you), wouldn't you be way better off by shooting and there by taking the fight to the ground and grappling with your opponent?

By taking the fight to the ground you would essentially be taking away your opponent's reach advantage.

Oh ya I'm also assuming that you have good skills in both striking and grappling (i.e. if you were a champ kick boxer and had never grappled before you would not take the fight to the ground no matter how tall your opponent was).

I'm also assuming that you don't know any back ground info on your opponent (i.e if he was a champ submission wrestler and you were not as proficient with grappling (as your opponent), you would not take the fight to the ground no matter how tall he was).

Some would probably say that you should just get in close to your opponent to strike (not on the ground) but I might argue that that would not be AS GOOD an option because if he was a big strong guy he might still be able to grab you (say by the shirt) and hold you out at the range where he wants you (i.e. where he can strike you but you can't strike him). This would be especially true if you had a shirt on (i.e. similar to a hockey fight).

Don't get me wrong the "getting in close to your opponent to strike" is still a good idea with merit, I'm just argueing that it would not be AS GOOD an idea as taking the fight to the ground, for the reason I gave.

I would love to hear some more opinions on this!

One more thing, on the ground your opponent would still enjoy a reach advantage (it would not suddenly disappear) but I would say that reach is WAY less of an advantage while grappling than while striking in the stand up game. That is pretty obvious right?Do most agree with me on that?

I guess the exception might be if your opponent knows enough to hold you in a guard. Which on the street the OVERWHELMING majority of people do not know enough to even know what a guard is, let alone use it.

So ya, I'm more or less talking about a street fight, with a way taller guy, and you can bet anything that he will not know enough to hold you in a guard when on the ground.
