  • gi?

i am soon going to begin classes at carlson gracie Jrs school. i noticed(in the single class i took) that most giuys there were wearing atama. i decided i would go with atama, but my question is: would i look stupid if i bought a gi before i started? should i wait a class? i really didnt enjoy training in sweatpants...and also, does it look stupid if i get a blue gi? i heard you can get by not washing them after EVERY practice which is good. thanks! sorry im kinda nervous!

No, no, maybe but most people don't wash their white Gi's after each class anyways.

      get a gi NOW.

blue is okay (i wouldn't get one though) since a lot of tournaments are trying to get fighters to bring one of each color so it's easier for everyone to see where the different fighter's limbs are when entangled.

washing it every other class is cool. just make sure you air dry it between classes so it won't get all funky. and notice i said every other CLASS, not day. because if you're rolling 4 hours/day (4 classes), i'd recommend washing it every day!

depending on how frequent you're going to be rolling, you might want to seriously consider getting two gi's.

well im jut starting now so i wont have to worry about competing for a while now. why wouldnt you get a blue gi? does it look tacky? ok so its better to have a gi going in? im deciding between atama goldweave or single weave, whats the difference which is better?

I wouldn't wear a blue gi, because i don't want to stick out like a sore thumb. i guess it's the same reason that i wouldn't wear a gi FULL of patches. but if the school you're going to go to has guys that wear blue gi's then go for it, if that's your thing. i still wouldn't. maybe it's the traditionalist in me. i dunno.

i don't really know the difference beetween a single and gold weave atama. i have an HCK. from what i gather, i believe the gold is a lighter weight than the single, but i could be wrong.

much luck to you and happy rolling!!!

          k~

I like the gold weave myself because it seems a little more light weight but is still durable.

I'd just recommend getting the cheaper of the 2. If you're just beginning your training then I wouldn't invest a lot. Just get ya something so that you don't have to wear sweat pants and stand out of the crowd.

ehehe thats kinda cool lookin. i decided i think im gonna get a simple atama white single weave. either that or the gold weave mario sperry model! the mario sperry is actually cheaper! its only 79 and the single is 85! the mario is goldweave, so it shold be better, but i think it looks tacky as hell with all those patches! can i take them off without hurting the gi?

                      aikidoka,

i've been on this forum since it's inception and i've read A LOT of "gi posts"... and what i've noticed is the great majority of the time, people here have mostly sided with HCK when comparing brands/styles of gi's.

i am NOT a rep for HCK. i have NO vested interest in HCK. howard IS a friend of mine, but i'm just telling you what i've seen and experienced. even though howard is a friend, i wouldn't recommend his product if i didn't really feel positive about it.

the reason i bring up the HCK again is because i wasn't sure of your price range and howard has a light weight, single weave priced at $70 and his standard single (i have one of these) is priced at $90. both of them are within the price range you mentioned.

quite frankly, i just felt compelled to try and save you time and $$ and try and help you to make the right decision the first time around. so many times do i read that guys have bought multiple gi's before finally finding the "right gi". i feel the HCK is the right gi. i've NEVER read any negative posts concerning the HCK's and i own two of them myself.

concerning the removal of the patches from the sperry gi, that would obviously be dependant on the quality of the cloth used and how the patches are sewed on. you should be able to pretty well asses if after removing the patches if the integrity of the material is severely affected. think, "if i remove these patches, would the material be able to handle severe and agressive pulling, tugging and jerking?", then you'll have your answer.

once again, good luck to you and your training.

                      train safe!

                      k~
