  • Grappling Games L.A. Results

Here's an email I received from Ryan Gregg:

Im between two trips so I am short on time. Here is a quick update and the results will be posted on the webpage next week.

We want to send out an extra special thanks to Mike Mello, Randy Bloom(Chocked out surfer), Kenny Jewel(Escojido), Joe Chalake(Creekwarrior), Elsegrado1, Fabio Santos, Alex Brandao, Ed Clay, Scott Proffit, Gumby, Rodrigo Meideros, Ricardo Pires, David Meyer, Silvio Pimenta, Dr.Bob Fae, EMT Wayne Smith, Tracy Burke, Diana Higashi, Juliano Prado, Wen, and there are many more im forgetting. Too all those mentioned and the ones I forgot, we want you to know that the event would not have been what it was without you. Our thanks cannot be put into words.

Grappling Games Los Angeles brought together 546 competitors and over 2000 spectators. This was our largest tournament to date. The tournament started on time Saturday and we were done before 6pm. Sunday we started a little late due to a major accident blocking all lanes on the 405 Northbound. We want to thank those that waited over 5 hours in traffic and didn’t turn back. Despite the hour delay on Sunday the tournament was still wrapped up before 5:30pm and we had everything broken down and packed by 7pm to be on our way home!

The divisions were stacked and the talent was not to be underestimated. The level of competition was higher than ever. The sportsmanship between the competitors is setting the standards for all events to come and models the ideal. We want to thank all the competitors for their true sportsmanship. There was one exception and that was on Saturday when a fight broke out between two Brownbelts. JeanJacques was the referee and broke the fight up in a quick manner. He proceeded to sit both competitors on the mat facing the crowd and silenced the audience. He gave an eloquent speech about sportsmanship. “The main problem here is that we are dealing with two high level competitors. These are Brownbelts and they are not showing that. It is very important for everyone to understand that I WILL NOT tolerate this type of behavior in my tournament. I disqualify both of you.” The crowd gave a round of applause. The two competitors are on a two tournament suspension and both came to terms and apologized to the tournament officials.

A little background on our tournaments: We promote a tournament in a relaxed atmosphere that is designed for the entire family to enjoy. The environment is open and the staff is friendly and there to help you. We offer the competitors and spectators to come and go as they please. We play music to keep the crowd alive and have a variety of vendor booths for you to pick up all those goodies we all love. The only thing we ask in return is that the crowd stay seated in the bleachers, the competitors show good sportsmanship to lead by example and that everyone helps us to promote a friendly aura with no politics. With this being said we look forward to seeing you all at our future events!

Sorry for the sloppy paste job but its still my rookie season. I will have everything done right and resend it next week. Due to the high demand for results im sending this out now.

Machado Dallas Team at L.A. Grappling Games!

Quick Note: There are still some spaces available for the Houston Seminar on June 2 & 3 but they are going fast. Contact Alvis Solis at 281-540-8443 or solismai@aol.com for more info.

Machado Dallas Team at the L.A. Grappling Games!

On Saturday, May 19th at the L.A. Grappling Games tournament in Los Angeles California, the Machado Jiu-Jitsu Dallas Team left an outstanding impression. There were over 400 competitors at this event.

The Machado Dallas Team included James Brown, John Jernigan, Travis Tooke and Peter Torres who all showed great skills.

The Purple Belt Division had James Brown and Travis Tooke sharing the title in the middle weight division (167-173lbs). Both had incredible matches. James won his first match by submission with an armbar, and won his second match by points (12 x 0) against a seasoned Brazilian fighter.

Travis Tooke won his first match by points (8 x 2) against one of the toughest students from the South Bay Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu club in a match with lots of skill and lots of heart. He won his second match against another Machado student from California by submission via "clock choke". Travis and James met in the finals and threw the coin to decide who would
get the gold medal, and Travis got it!

At the Blue Belt Cruiser Weight (187-202lbs) John Jernigan defeated two opponents, one by points and the other by submission, before meeting a Machado student for the finals. He lost that match by points (2 x 4) in a very disputed match.

Carlos Machado and all the students from Dallas wish to congratulate them for their great performances and outstanding victories!

      Woof!

The above should read that Travis Tooke defeated his first opponent
by points rather than "was defeated".

Congrats to Travis, my student and now one of my training partners.
Congrats to my Machado family especailly JB and John Jernigan...way to
      represent!
