  • Which BJJ greats did you meet?

I haven't met many; actually 2 and one isn't really "famous."

First is my instructor Marcelo Perdomo. He is a former Brazilian and International champ so it wierds me out people don't know who he is. It makes me feel like he's a fraud (but I know he isn't).

The other is my new "other" instructor Fracisco Bueno. We had a pretty small class at this TKD school before and the BJJ guys got kicked out and only a few of us really care to follow Marcelo around. The rest were just guys that trained at every MA that was at that school. Since he's Marcelo's good friend we're moving to his school. He's a hilarious guy, I wonder what he's like to train with.

I want to meet Rickson, I signed up for a private w/ him but I doubt that's happening anytime soon.

there's an old post about a year ago that someone asked who you've trained with and I started a list and it was pretty long. If you added who I've met, it is really long.

Being in So Cal, you should have had the oppurtunity to meet many BJJ greats.
I've been lucky to have trained and met a lot of dudes.

If you are really curious, I'll post the list...

Well, being that I live in South Texas, I think i've met (by Texas standards) several major names:

Rey Diogo, Marcelo Alonso (the Carlson Gracie Team Black Belt, not the magazine editor), Andre "Alemao"

          Carlos Machado

          Jacare

          Rickson and Royce Gracie

Tank Abbott (just met him at the Orange Co. airport, didn't really talk to, or hang out w/him)

I also met Tank the same way you did except he's not a BJJ great now is he?

I saw him at a Black Angus as I was leaving and he was entering. Me and my brother were all like "Its Tank!" and he didn't even acknowledge us.

              Hookah,

Same type of story w/me. I'm catching a flight from Orange Co. airport to come home to San Antonio. I glance in a news-stand type store, and he was in line with a newspaper. I didn't want to make a big deal out of it, so I just walked up and said, "Hey, Tank, big fan, nice to meet you" and shook hands w/him.

As I approached him, he had a look on his face like he was uncomfortable being recognized. Not a "leave me alone" look, but more like he was uncomfortable w/the attention. He said "thanks a lot, brother."

I'd hate to be in their shoes... we meet them once, for 10 seconds, and base our opinions on that. I'm sure if someone caught me out in public, there are times I wouldn't make a very good impression.

I have to say, though, that ALL the guys I've met have been very cool. I think it's all in the way you approach them.

I trained with Comprido at Flo MMA, he's a really good teacher, nice guy, cool person with a really cute family.
