I was only in LA for a weekend for a gracie jj tourney, and it was heaven.......But Detroit comes in a close second. We got the good and the bad,
Highest per Capita murder rate in the U.S.
3rd highest car theft rate in the U.S.
3rd fattest city in the U.S.
The Redwings
The Tigers(ok they suck but our new ball park rules)
Plenty of bars and strip clubs
Kid Rock
Eminem
Electronic Music festival
Auto show
Lots of boxing gyms

Yea I used to train with a buch of different people here. The gracie TA here, which is sub-par, carlos the brown belt who used to post here and his purple belt buddy, and some machado guys. There is a cool school here that has a bunch of machado guys and kick boxing there. Its been awile since i trained but im gonna start back up one of these days. the machado school is good. I will dig their number up and post it ...

I've always wondered why LA gets such a bad rap. Admittedly I haven't been there in about 18 years (lived there when I was a little kid for two years) but I remember it as being really nice. And even at age eight I appreciated all the bikini clad babes at the beach. What can I say? I never went through that "girls are icky" stage. It's the same with New York (I lived there in high school). You'd tell people you live in New York and they'd tell you how much they hate it and how dirty, etc. it is. Maybe New Yorkers and Angeleans should start doing that to everyone else.

oh come now....detroit has THE worse rap of any city in the US. try telling people you are from there and watch their expression. of course, most of it is deserved. it's getting a little better in the past years with the new mayor, but when coleman young was in there, watch out! still, I would not even think of walking around most of detroit by myself, daylight or nightime.

yea vortrex, detroit does kinda suck, but its nowhere near as bad as that outside suburb Inkster. If you havent been here in awile, that place is a war zone. detroit is actually gettin better. what area were you from?

inkster is that bad now? how is redford and wasteland (westland)? thankfully I grew up way out the outskirts of metro detroit (milford), and then lived even further out for college (mostly ann arbor and ypsi). of course ypsi had a higher per capita murder rate than detroit at least one year I was living there. I've spent a lot of time in downtown detroit for various things (concerts, hockey, grand prix, etc) and have seen the very scary side. I don't think people on the west coast can appreciate literally square blocks of neighborhoods where it looks like a bomb went off. kinda looks like those pictures you see of beruit, etc. how is 8 mile these days?

oh do I ever, that's the area I grew up in, 26 years around those parts, and will be back there on the 12th. commerce township is right outside milford, very small town. nothing to worry about there. walled lake is called by many walltucky. lots of pickup trucks and rednecks, bigger than commerce township, but still a small town. you won't need to fear for your life there, about 40 miles from detroit. believe it or not, walltucky even has a bjj club!

small world vortrex! I was born in west detroit area but moved out to dearborn heights area when I was young. I lucked out, a mile to the west and i would have had to go to school at cody high. that woulda sucked. St andrews hall and the state theatre for clubs and bars, and yea i have been to several strip joints on the seedy 8 mile strip, hehehe. 8 mile is bad. there is hookers all lined up and down it, it looks like hollywood strip or something. redford/ wastleland are still ok, but inkster is by far the worst area. Milford huh? I used to hang out at camp dearborn all the time, chase girls, that kinda sheet...Yipsi is a dump too. Ever been to the bar the Wooden Nickel?

Sweep you have lucked out. not only is walled lake probably one of the most nicest areas of south east michigan, it also has a gracie TA ran by this harvey guy. you can get his number from the gracieacademy website. the machado school i told you about is kinda far from there....but the gracie ta is prolly 5 minutes.

people from milford high ALWAYS use to get in fights with the people going to camp dearborn. we hated all those city slickers, but this is the mid-later 80's I am talking about. I never went into the wooden nickel, but I could see deja vu from the front porch of my house! ypsi is a strange place I tell ya.

It's been about 3 years since I've had to go back to Michigan
and so, next time I DO have to go, I will bring along my Gi.
At least I won't be stuck at all those family get togethers at
night.

I just got back from the airport, LAX, our neice had a layover, from Detroit
to Sydney, Australia..........
so, we spent a few hours catching up on the family.

Hahahah so true vortrex,
I ALWAYS got into fights with those milford scumbags (no offense to you). They just absolutely hated us- and for good reason. We would always come into there peacefull quiet town and start stuff, drink and just be plain loud/rude.

Sweep, I don't think too highly of TA's, especially those under Royce/rorian. But I think Harvey was a relson guy or trained with him for a bit, so I bet he is pretty good. Striped blue belt if i remember. The machado school is great. Roger Machado is a frequent visitor to the school. Plus they got kick boxing and yoga and some other sheet there.
