  • I can't escape from the freakin knee in the belly...

In about 3 years of off and on BJJ, I have never@been able to effectively use any of the techniques I have been shown to escape knee in the belly.
I am pretty good with submissions, passing guard, and keeping mount/cross/etc., but without being able to escape knee in the belly I'll never get a blue belt. Which techniques work well for you guys?

I hate knee in the belly

I've been a blue belt for years and I still have trouble getting some peoples knees off my tummy!! It's truly a bitch at times.
I would probably do a crappy job of describing the techniques I know to get "it" off, but you probably know them already. You are not alone, my friend!!!

Dont try and get him off you.Get out from under him.
Post off the knee and shrimp out.
If he follows reach under and grab the ankle and grab his belt at the belly button and throw him over face first.
These may work, but it all depends on feeling where his center is and timing it right.
      As always,it takes practice.
      Just something to try.

Knee on the Stomach (KOS) for the person on the bottom is very dangerous.
The person on top wants to make you as uncomfortable and painful as possible so that you react to make a mistake. You need to be careful not to expose your arms or elbows. If you try to push the knee off your stomach, you expose the elbow for an arm lock submission. If you do try to push the knee off, you must do it quickly, keep your arm tucked into your body and turn into your opponent.
You need to quickly assess your opponent's balance. If they should make a misake in the base and are leaning forward, you can quickly reach up, grab the lapels and launch them forward and you can spin around and either be in their guard, half guard, or you can try to pass and be on them, side guard.
If they should be back a bit, you might be able to spin between their legs and reach up and pull them from behind.
I may not have explained these moves properly but there are several ways of escaping the knee on the stomach. But remember, KOS is a move that is meant to inflict discomfort and pain and you need to react quickly and properly or else you will easily get submitted

I do the same thing that Dan referred to. But, you know, knee-on-belly, is just like the mount. It's very easy to upa a mediocre mount, but a really skilled guy will ride you unhindered til the cows come home. So don't be discourage if you have more trouble against the purple and brown belts' knee-on-bellies. Give it time, bro
