Well, Linden, I must say yours was a fabulous post, seriously.

Regulation and licensing are required (yes) for cars, to start your own business, and (yes again) for guns. They are also required register a martial arts black belt.

But the main problem in this country isn't dangerous drivers (who either transgress, or somehow make it through, the licensing procedure) ... nor is it dangerous gun owners (who either transgress, or somehow make it through, the licensing procedure).

So, while I agree that regulation and licensing in these issues may not absolutely limit "all" untoward potential harm, as you (righty) say ... what it does is minimize the harm.

But do you want to know what the REAL problem and harm to our country is? THE FACT THAT ANY SORRY S.O.B. AND HIS EQUALLY-SORRY MATE CAN COPULATE AND PRODUCE AS MANY SORRY OFFSPRING AS THEY WANT, UNLICENSED AND WITHOUT RESTRICTION!!!

This is further exacerbated by the fact our LIBERAL, BLEEDING HEART country (of Ronins) provide "programs" to mendaciously facilitiate this unbridled overbreeding of the unfit in our country ... which maintains said offspring so they can produce more of the same. Our real problem is this insane downward spiral of filling what was once beautiful nature with ghettoes, smog, and more and more shuffling mouths to feed, which in turn creates more and more waste products we have to find ways to dispose of.

So, if there EVER was a "Licensing Program" that needed to be put into place to regulate further harm from coming to our nation (and really the entire world), it would be a QUALIFICATION AND BACKGROUND CHECK TO HAVE A FREAKING CHILD ... so that most of our future children would be born of educated, intelligent, successful, CAPABLE parents ... rather than just any two sexually-aroused bi-pedal humanoids ...

You know what's wierd? More than half of the people who have children in this country could NOT adopt one. That is, there are certain procedures and criteria one must meet in order to qualify to adopt a kid.

And yet people who fail such a test can screw and have fifteen kids if they want!!!

Why must I show a certain level of sanity and competence in order to be able to receive a permit to buy a gun ... and in order to drive a car ... and in order to start my own business ... and yet I have NO restrictions on something as serious as bringing a child into this world??!!??

Without question, THE most responsibility-ridden and care-laden of ALL of these undertakings is the bringing into the world of a child ... which is why it is so hard to qualify to adopt one ... and yet I can screw any old HO that I want, and have as many of them as I want, and have absolutely NO restrictions on this whatsoever.

THAT is the biggest f-ing problem in our nation, and as I said it is THE downward spiral upon which ALL other problems are based ... the breeding of unfit individuals, exacerbated by the resulting offspring being raised and managed by the incompetent/negligent parents.

A good chunk of the problem is that people won't take responsibility for their actions. It's far too easy to point a finger at someone else and say "There's my problem!" Take gun control. Washington DC is a strict no-gun place to live, yet has probably the highest crime rate in the nation. Why? The average law-abiding citizen can't shoot back because only the criminals have guns. So politicians, in their infinite wisdom (yeah, right!) decide you and I do not need guns because we can not be trusted to own them and not shoot each other and guns are just plain evil. Since it is harder to outlaw people, let's outlaw guns. I could go on more, but I'm tired, cranky and just plain irritable. Ask my family. LOL

A little toughts from your far and away brother...

Regarding gun control:

Italy is divided in "Municipalities" each of them have a degree of indipence regarding certain laws; CCWs and gun buying permits are regulated by local chiefs of police. The places where gun control is less stricts are the ones safer. In my area we are pretty much all armed and crime rate is amazingly low. Rapes and robberies are virtually unheard of.

Regarding birth control:

I completely agree that this is the single one matter that must be held on control. To "make" a child you a sex night and nothing more, to "raise" a child you must be a person with brass balls, and that's is sadly uncommon.

Not a bad deal, really, pay people to have additional kids, fund them, and when faced with an opposing party who will NOT fund your numerous philanderings, they will surely vote for you, and against them.

On a serious note, (maybe John Bennett can help me out here.) I remember reading that someone (I think it might have been Alexander Hamilton) wrote that once a democratic society realizes that it can vote prosperity upon itself (can you say free prescriptions for seniors?) we are on our way to ruin.

What do I propose?

I propose that the same criteria by which a person must be held to adopt ALSO be held in order to give birth, for BOTH parents.

Among the many things that come to mind would be:

• At least a five-year relationship between the couple to demonstrate the ability to remain a couple.
  
• Neither parent could have been convicted of a felony.
  
• A consistent, steady income level of over $80,000 a year, minimum to be able to provide the necessary care for said child/ren.
  
• A proven habit of saving money during the 5 year waiting span, sufficient for the planned education of said child.
  
• A full health care policy in place for not just themselves, but that would accomodate a child.

This would be just scratcing the surface, but you can see how this basic test would eliminate about 80% of the children being born already, and would leave those actually being born has having a much greater chance to turn out well ... AND NOT HAVING TO BE PAID FOR BY OUR FREAKING TAXES!!!

Mandatory sterilization?

Well, all of us would start out free to f*ck any good-looking ho we wanted ... but if we did not use contraceptives, and brought a child into this world without a permit, THEN we would have to be sterilized from that point forward. Once again, freedom until proven unworthy of freedom.

See we SHOULD be free to do what we want in this country ... once we have proven our responsibility. This is the whole idea behind licensure. You are free to drive ... once you show competence and get a license. You are free to own a business ... once you get the necessary permits. You should be free to buy a gun ... once you are investigated and proven safe to have one and issued a permit. WELL, PARTNER, SAME WITH HAVING A KID!!!

You're free to have one, any time you want, once you prove yourself competent enough to have one.

If you have not been in a relationship the required time, too bad. If you do not make enough money to provide for a child, too bad. If you do not have an adequate savings account, too bad.

You see all of these things PROVE DILLIGENCE, and can be met, if the interested party had the intelligence, the interest, and the sincere committment, to do so. And if a couple ISN'T committed enough to to achieve this standard ... well WHAT DOES THAT TELL YOU about how they'll be as parents for their children?

So, yes, Ober, I WOULD make a great president, only I would be shot before the years' end because PEOPLE CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!!!

To paraphrase the movie "Parenthood" ; you need a license to buy a dog, you need a license to catch a FISH, but they'll let any a$$hole be a father.

I totally agree with the fact that people are having too many kids they can't take care of and don't really care about. And while your regulations, Joe, seem fair to me, it will never happen, not in the USA. People will not put up with it.

I firmly believe that all serious problems in any society stem from basic negative aspects of human nature. That's what makes the problem unsolvable, because human nature does not and will not change. It is a biological urge to procreate and it is possesed by every species on earth. The difference between people and the rest of nature is we have the capacity to realize when it is a good time to breed and when it is not. Unfortunatly, good sense is something that not all people have or are willing to use.

The real issue is that it's too easy to have a kid. Back in the day, if you had 2 kids and couldn't take care of em, well, someone was probably gonna starve. But life is too easy these days, and people take that for granted. Like Mako said, once people realize they can vote prosperity on themselves they take advantage, take for granted, and stop caring about things beyond their own selfish desires. All these things are problems of human nature. Like I said, human nature cannot be changed.

I say we do like the spartans did and just leave the baby on the hillside for the vultures. Is that cold?
