I know that Tony and Matt had a separation of ways, BUT I doubt if Tony was punked by anyone. Matter of fact, throughout his series he makes reference to calling the viewer a "croonie." A slight stab at what Matt once said. I'm not even 50% sure of the story any longer, it's been some time ago when all that happened.
Personally, I think Tony did an excellent job with his series. There was a lot of new stuff and a different approach to ground fighting offered. After watching them, you'll become very aware of how vulnerable you are when you think you're safe. Some very serious moves shown. Some major improvements to common submissions.
I read that article about Gotch. It was good.
But, he does a submission on Furey in one of the pictures and they say it is not a triangle, it looks like a wierd triangle, but they say it's not. They say choking is illegal in catch wrestling, that the sub shown in the picture attacks the carotid arteries. Well, folks, a triangle choke also attacks the carotid arteries. The word choke doesn't mean blocking the esophagus, as pertaining to juijitsu, it means blocking the flow of blood to the brain via the carotid arteries. So, what the hell is the difference between what Gotch is showing and a bjj triangle choke?
ps- a wimp like me is not going to be able to pull of some of that catch stuff on a stronger guy. I'm not capable of "having the strength of a bear" or being "the God of pro-wrestling in Japan". How come there are no catch guys stepping up to the plate in any of the submission stuff that is currently happening? How come the Japanese fighters never acknowledge Gotch or catch wrestling?
From what they said in the article I was under the impression Gotch was well know in Japan. And I do have to say that the move you are talking about just looks like a triangle with an improvised arm bar...
I don't think anything big will ever come of it. I mean, the reason no one knew about BJJ before the UFC is because there was no such thing as mixed martial arts in America before that. I think at this point there can be no more revolutions like the BJJ revolution. If something that big were out there, it would have already surfaced. I.E., one of Tony C's students would be in Pride or something by now.
