I like Judo. My eldest kid does it, but the whole physical aim of it is to either throw or hold a man onto his back. Yes, there are submissions (arm locks and strangles) but, in an effort to make it enetertaining, these are emphasized less and less.

BJJ's aim is to defeat a man in combat. There is no need for fancy, crowd pleasing throws, so they use more practical take downs. They also still emphasize submissions, and use a much wider range of them.

Judo developed in a country where sport was the main thrust, and change was resisted. BJJ developed where self defence was the order of the day, and effective change was positivley encouraged.

Yes, my son does Judo. But he would do BJJ if there was a class near us.

free judo

I called up this judo club and they were for real. I can't believe they teach for free. The only costs the guy mentioned was an annual 36 dollar insurance fee, and the cost of a gi (but I already have one). They work out during the week on the same days as my jiu-jitsu class but they also get together on saturdays early in the morning, wich would be perferct for me.


Are there many judo clubs that teach free of charge?


I know a lot of jiu-jitsu guys throw off on judo but it can't be that bad. There used to be a judo guy that came to my jiu-jitsu class and I think he was from the same judo club, and he was able to throw me really hard a few times. They don't concentrate so much on ground work as jiu-jitsu, but that doesn't matter to me since I also do jiu-jitsu.

Hey Mr Poopy, don't get me wrong. There are still a million Judoka that could kick my head in. Although I do think that BJJ is better for real fighting, Judoka are strong, skilfull and rock hard. They certainly have my respect.

Judo used to be real kick ass but the main stream theme of Judo is sport which makes it real pussy. Probably some guys who still study the old style Judo that Kano originally created instead of the sport version.

Poopy, regarding the Judo prices. I've shopped around and the judo schools are MUCH cheaper than BJJ schools. The typical monthly rate for BJJ in my area is $80-$90. The Judo schools I've checked out are around $40-50, with my college judo club only charging $15 for 3 months of membership.

150 to 250 for any martial art is awfully steep. my jiu-jitsu instructor charges 50 a month and he's pretty flexible with people. i haven't paid him for almost the past 6 months. He just had me work with him on some websites and a publication that he does.

Yeah its due to the BJJ popularity and the high prcies of life in Manhattan. Also the schools are headed by Renzo Gracie, Fabio Clemente, Marcos Santos. Actually Marcos was willing to go 100.00 for a month for me but I don't have the time

BJJ or Judo

BJJ is far better than Judo, as every one else said Judo is now a sport not a MA and is not very good for a streetfight.

As for the price in Australia the prices for learning any MA arent that bad.

my first judo class

I finally got to go to my first judo class. It was almost like my first BJJ class. A few high ranking guys, and me. 2 brown belts and the instructor was a black belt. I'm guessing brown represents a higher level like brown belts in other MA's.

We did some grappling at the end of the class. Their ground work wasn't bad but I did suprise them with a few moves. Didn't manage to tap them but I could defend against them. I was very suprised that they were so mobile. I was half way expecting them to lay there

For me, the whole "judo is a sport, not a MA" stuff is just not true. Why would anyone say that anyhow? Because of so much manipulation of the gi? These guys were not bad at all.

I'm going to seriously try to make it in there to work out with these guys more often.
