  • Do You Need Certification to Work as a Sterile Processing Tech in Your State?

I am researching sterile processing technician careers and noticed that requirements seem to vary a lot depending on the state.

In some places certification appears mandatory, while in others employers may hire without it and only recommend certification later.

For those already working in the field, how strict are the requirements where you live? Did you need certification before getting hired, or were you able to start working first and get certified later?

Found this while browsing and wanted to add my two cents. In my state, certification is not mandatory, but it’s highly recommended after getting some work experience. I’d love to hear what others have done, especially those from states where certification is required before starting work. Maybe we can put together a list of states and their requirements to help everyone out!

In my experience, checking the state license requirements is a solid way to figure out what you'll need as a sterile processing tech. Some states are stricter than others, and many employers prefer certification even if it's not legally required. I found the breakdown on that page useful when sorting out my own qualifications, especially regarding continuing education and necessary certifications.
