I'm doing Kung Fu San Soo

I was going to do mixed martial arts but my mom said it was too much money. So, I signed up for kung fu san soo. I went to my first lesson yesturday. I had fun and I learned alot for the first day. My instructor told me I'm a natural but I go to fast for a beginner. It cost $58 for the first month, then $90 after that and that includes my uniform. I practice 5 times a week for an 1 and a half a a day. Mon-thursday and Saturday.

          Sup Monique,

Good luck on your training! San Soo is a great art. I've noticed in your earlier posts, you stated that you want to suceed in martial arts. And your reason for learning martial arts is to learn to fight and to compete. Well, in San Soo they do not compete in tournaments because they say their techniques are too dangerous to compete with. In the other hand, if you want to learn to fight, san soo will help you with that. Anyways, just wanted to inform you with that info in case you really wanted to compete in tournaments. Since you are in Covina, and want to compete. Check out Red Dragon Karate schools. Theres a lot in your area. And they rank high in Sport Karate tournaments. Good luck with your training.

              Thanks

I found out yesturday that Kung Fu San Soo doesn't compete because some of the things they do are illegal. I like the martial arts place that I'm going to right now. I have a good instructor.

That means the Kung Foo Soo school would probably be a better place to train...but I guess if you want to compete, then stay where you are. It's all up to you, really.

                    monique,
if you're interested in self defense, i would steer clear of any traditional martial art, and even the mmas. muggers and rapists don't have kickboxing matches with their victims. you would be far better off learning how to cheat from very close range (eye gouges/jabs/rakes, boxing ears, cruhes) and how to verbally/psychologically set someone up so you can act first. if you're into competing, then most martial arts would be ok. just don't let kicking and punching practice give you a false sense of security. just my 2 cents.

                      So Far I learned...

Cool moves such as kicks like the piston kick, shin kick and round house kick. I also learn some punches but most importanty I learned how to block and how to take people down when they grab me. I felt really good when I got my uniform and white belt on Sat. I have alot of fun . Everytime I go my instructor tells me it's in your blood. He always enourages me and he is just soo great.

Is it ok to tell people your in martial arts?

My family is telling me that I shouldn't tell anyone but I told my friends to share the news. Was I wrong for telling people?

It has been my experience that when people find out you train in MA, they tend to look at you differently. Some for the good, some for the bad. Some will challange you with constant 'what ifs' or want you to demonstrate your awesome martial power.

Personally, the less people who know what I do, the better for me. I don't broadcast who I am on any of the forums. Only a select few know who I really am...

No one in my family knows except my wife. The only friends who know are the ones I train with. This keeps everything uncomplicated and if someone wants to start shit they're in for a BIG surprise.

It comes down to personal choice really. You can read what happened to Suzuki_Fanboy when he told people his rank. That is how most people outside MA react when they find out you are in a MA.

For me, I like my secret idenity.....

I'd have to agree with SZ, and not just because of what happened to me on the board, that's not that big of a deal, really. But because people will want to pick fights with you. I was given the advice when I was in middle school by one of my training partners and good friends that I should not tell people once I got into high school, because then, arrogance pops in, and people will always want to test you. So I'd have to say to try and keep it secret if you can, but if you can't make sure only your good friends know.

Fanboy should heed his own advice more often!

Not so much 'keeping it secret' but keeping a low profile is good. But then again, that's always a plus.
