Try being more aggressive. Attempt one sub at 100%, then another, then another, etc. If you keep them on the defensive the whole time they won't have time to pass your guard, and sooner or later you'll catch them with something. I'll give you 2 combinations to try.

Spinning Armbar - to Triangle on other arm (circle leg around the head) - to Sweep (underhook/grab near leg) - to Mounted Triangle - then roll to side to finish.

Spinning Armbar - to Omoplata on other arm - to Triangle (spin and drag).

Just keep active and you'll figure out the possibilities are endless!

    Good luck!

shasan, there are lots of things that you can do from that position.
But remember one good one is much better than a dozen not so good ones.

Sometimes a great fighter doesnt necessarily make a great instructors !
I'm not saying your instructor isnt any good, but perhaps a private tuition will help.

I remember practicing with this bjj guy and he knew so many moves, I felt embarrased.

But everytime we fought, I beat him with ease !
      My point ?
      It's quality not quantity.

Regarding Ice pheonix's advice " to be more aggressive".

          I personally would diagree.

          My reason?

Because aggression can take the place of technique,
and therefore mask the lack of technique.

Using brute force to win is not the correct way to improve technical ability.

It is a short term solution.

Infact You are doing well not to use it.

When I first started, I used to use nothing but aggressive brute strength, and to good effect, but its not the way.
because it gets used as a substitute,
but because I could win, I thought that my technique was ok.

          When infact it wasnt.

Thats why you are better off, not using aggression, and losing.
          Strange as that may sound.

Okay, wrong choice of word. Replace "Aggressive" with "Active". Being passive in grappling doesn't work.

Try to only roll with more advanced people. Don't worry about getting tapped by them. They will make you better.

                Aggressive

I had the EXACT SAME problems as you !!! Just as bad if not worse! I was seriously depressed about it. Here's my story:

AGGRESSION is a factor. I was usually worried or concerned about hurting my training partner. While I DON't suggest going at 100%, I suggest you take the initiative and try to control the match.

HESITATION is a factor. I was too busy focusing on what the other guy was doing. By the time i realized what he was doing, it was too late.

I suggest you work on a cycle of moves that flow together (if you were in the guard):

go for a sweep (and if it doesn't work)
go for an arm bar (and if that doesn't work)
go for a different sweep (and if that doesn't work)
go for an oma plata etc.....

Forgive my ignorance, but whats an omaplata? I've only just started groundwork, so my knowledge in this area is limited.

                  Thanks.

                    ...sucking at BJJ

I don't know what an omaplata is either, and I've been in MA for 20years... and I still stink.

Bottom line: neither the Gracies nor Bruce... well, nobody is instantly good. MA training is about self-improvement--a progression.

All I can tell you is to practice every time you think of it. At work, home, school, etc. Mentally, if not physically AND mentally.

It's about making yourself better than you were, not making yourself better than I am...

oma plata is a shoulder lock with your legs.

I think that has a pretty good picture of it.

I thought it was a song - Oma Plata Blanca! I'm just a bird in the sky.......

Anyway, apparently JJ Machado has a sign over his dojo door which says "leave you ego at the door". By that I believe he means that, when training, you should experiment in order to learn and develop. Try new things. Don't just try to win all the time (i.e. feeding your ego) as you will stagnate.

It is much easier to say than do. My own instructor tells us to do it, and then looks down on us if a junior grade gets the better of you. And he takes it as an insult if you try to submit him.

Leave your ego at the door.
