Actually I work for a shipbuilding company. I am the head of electrical design. Don't drink a whole lot of beer....Me, Jim, and Jack are good buddies. I don't shoot pool, and I never ask someone who works for me to do something that I would not do myself.

I don't take Aikido anymore. I am training in BJJ and MT for some while now. Have not done Aikido in about 8yrs.

I don't know if that's an old man's drink or not, but I know I don't drik it. I usually go half and half with some coke.

What other styles do you study or have you studied in the past??

Just for an example I was just down for lunch and I was talking to my buddy that joined TKD about a month ago and he was telling me that he is already out of his white belt. That is advancing way too fast.....what could he possibly have learned in one month???? Now he thinks he is like Bruce Lee or something and is already challenging people.........he did not challenge me yet, and he won't if he knows what is good for him..... .....I would hate to make him and then have to go and quit TKD.

Most TKD schools are Mc Dojangs. That's not to say that there aren't any salvagable techniques, cause there are.

Huge difference between TKD kicking and Muay Thai. Tank, Dan Severn, Mark Coleman and Bob Sapp - arguably the biggest and meanest fighters will talk about what the receiving end of a Thai kick feels like, even from fighters ~ 100 lbs lighter.

In TKD you train to snap kick at 3lb flapper pads - which are good for speed and accuracy. In Muay Thai you work up to 30lb sand packed pads and swing your entire leg behind the kick. If you can send a guy into the wall while holding these pads and giving a 50lb weight advantage to the pad holder, I would say you have decent kicking power. Then again, there's a time to kick....

I would guess that your buddy is in a WTF (World Taekwon-do Federation) school? They (at least the schools I've seen, test monthly) which is completely ridiculous in my opinion, it's clearly about money for them. There's a girl here at work that joined a WTF class, a month later they tested her and had her break boards! Well, she messed up her wrist pretty bad and hasn't been back since.

I agree with you Tom to a degree, I can kick like a flippin mule, granted, I'm 6'2", 225, but it's technique. I've also studied MT, but I could kick pretty hard even before that. People scoff at the basics, but there is nothing more important!

I don't know what kind of school he is in, but I know that he just joined about a month or so ago and he has already gotten out of his white belt. I don't recall him saying anything about breaking a board or anything. Not that that means anything cuz the board doesn't hit back. They should test you by making you fight someone of a similar caliber.

That was the only time I've heard of someone breaking that early, but nonetheless, they have no business even testing after one month. You have to look at testing from a different perspective than just fighting someone. Sparring is required for testing in upper levels, but testing just demonstrates that you've been paying attention for the most part. Studying Aikido, you should know about that. I think the problem with a lot of schools, especially TKD unfortunately, is that most, if not all students get promoted whether they show good technique or not.

I studied hapkido for 5 years and could also kick pretty hard and fast. It helps going into MT, but I've discarded about 95% of my hapkido striking techniques. Side kicks, axe kicks and turning side/back kicks are salvagable and catch many MT guys off guard - you probably know what I mean.

I'm a huge fan of perfecting technique and then applying it.

Talking about Aikido...the school that I went too was different than most schools. We only had 3 belts white, brown, and black. You stay at each one for a very long time and we did have to fight to advance.

absolutely, all the flying kicks, etc. are basically worthless, worthless maybe isn't the word, who knows what opportunity can present itself, but 9.9 times out of 10 you're not going to use them. ( I actually used a 360 back kick once) I had a guy in class that was very proud of his reverse hook kick, it was a good looking kick (looking being the operative word), granted, I used that same kick very effectively in point tournaments, but that's another world, he was bragging about it to anyone who would listen, so when sparring started he couldn't wait to use it on me. Needless to say, I about threw him through the floor, he avoids me now. (didn't like him anyway)
