If rage causes someone to go on a Columbine-style shooting spree, to have a health-related stroke, or to beat your wife for having a bad day then I would argue that rage is counter productive. You can't be angry all of the time without doing damage to your ticker.
If you have a controlled burst when the situation calls for it (life threatening), rage is usefull. Channeled rage is extremely usefull - it has a poker face appearance
