  • I too questioned the value of judo in a combat environment until we had a new guy in our shop. He is a goofy looking guy, kinda heavyset...or so he seemed. I got to know him and on night on the midnight shift we started talking about fighting. We were picking on each other a little and I challenged him to a little match, thinking that I'm get him down and armbar him easily (at this point I didn't think he knew anything about marshal arts). He stood up, took of his BDU shirt and took a normal, palms out stance. Since we were standing on carpeted flooring I didn't want to shoot in or anything so I just went in and clinched. He immediatly took my back, which I love because one of my favorite moves is the kimura. I locked in the arm and went to twist but I found that he had incredible balance and he promptly took me to the ground and fell into my guard. At this point I was thinking that he would have problems with my guard because I still didn't think that he had any martial arts training, so I went for an armbar and then immediatly switched to a triangle, pulling his head down. Somehow (I'm still not sure what happend) he got out of my triangle easily and got me in a quick and hard front armbar making me tap because I coudn't raise up to counter it. He had insane weight control and told me afterwards that he was a judo brown belt, actually he just got his black belt a month ago. I asked him how he was so good at ground control and he said he was maybe a green belt in juijitsu, but that while training Judo, you learn alot of juijitsu techniques. he told me that he had always learned that Juijitsu is Judo without the throws. He has beaten me several times since then, and actually thrown me probably 30 times when we spare. He'll even let me try to kick and punch him but as you guys probably know, once a judoka grabs you, you either go to the ground or submit standing.Juijitsu is Judo without the throws.

      ?

I find it a tad bizarre you're challenging guys and thinking you're gonna get "fast armbars" in like someone's living room.

I guess it's good this guy didn't pop your elbow.

      • We were at work and it was around midnight. We were bored and just talking crap to each other. If you are in the Military you know how much people insult each other and how competitive people can be. It was all in good fun tho. It wasn't like we were streetfighting, Just doing a little grappling.

          • I don't mind giving people my back if I'm standing. Maybe if I get choked from my back I'll be more careful :-)

            • You would see a lot more Judo throws in MMA events if the floor was concrete, not matting.

                • I can't remember exactly the name of a video-tape that was reviewed by "Budo International", and that was a collection of Judo-techniques for street self-defense. Reviewer said Judo could be so effective you could actually kill the opponent in a real fight with it.
Thing is, I don't see how Judokas deal with vicious, sudden attacks that involve combinations, tricks, low-kicks etc.

Combinations and low kicks? I'd expect a trick or two from someone trying to attack me. But combinations and low kicks? I guess if I were being mugged in a thai boxing class then I'd need to find a way to deal with that.

I learned the other night at Judo that tying up with an experienced Judoka can land you straight on your ass. Better take off all your clothes and grease up real good if you're gonna attack one.

There have been killings by Judoka. I read a while back about a Judoka in Canada killing a man after he tried to attack him with an axe. The attacker did manage to hit him in the head with the axe, but not good enough to put him down. The Judoka ended up choking him to death. Heard another story of some guy in New York that tossed a guy onto a sidewalk and cracked his head well enough that he died.

I dunno if you've ever done Judo or not, but if you have then you know how sore you can be after a few hours of grappling of being tossed around. Just be glad there is a mat under you in the dojo.

Well I sparred against a judoka, a friend of mine (who also fights in Muay Thai), and I could experience how quickly they can throw you, as soon as your body gets in contact with theirs...
He had difficulties to deal with fast boxing combinations though. But i don't really know if Judo instructors teach self-defense against punches, kicks, elbows or not nowadays. I know for sure that Judo was taught for self-defense purposes many years ago, now I think the trend is to teach BJJ, JKD and mixed-martial arts, or stuff like KravMaga in this field.

I agree that MuayThai is great but I disagree with you saying Judo sucks.

Have you ever done Judo? If they get a hold of you and flip you,you are basically screwed especially if it is on pavement.

I wouldn't want to be thrown by a Judo expert.

I am not saying Judo is the only good grappling art, infact I feel all grappling arts are good, however not all stand up arts are good.

Combine MuayThai and Judo and you will have an excellent combination of techniques and an incredible art of self-defense for both stand up and grappling.

                              NO CLUE!

Judo can be applied to the streets and is very effective. Its up to teh instructor to show you the difference of gi/no-gi.

                              • judo self-defence

for those of you that don't know, and that seems to be most of you, when j. kano created judo, there were two levels of judo, the sport and a self-defense section, the self-defense section included all the basic strikes, kicks, and holds/locks/chokes of the triaditional ju-jitsus, while most of the judo schools today emphysyes throwing and ground grappaling, much of what is taught as ww2 combatives is from the origenal judo systems, palm heels, side of hand(slash) elbows, knee, low level kicks, etc.
outside of some advanced self-defense techniques?? such as a jumping back spin kick, there is very little self-defense judo does not cover.
