Judo -- self defense

Yawn.... Martial Arts and religion have so much in common. Now if only we could mix the two, the Protestant Reformation might have turned out different.
Luther was big guy but Ignatius Loyola was a soldier once. I think from the extreme pennance Luther could take some punishment, but again, Loyola knew how to kill. It would be a good fight. Just imagine.... what if Don King was the pope?
(pardon sacrilege)

Falcon, your passion for arguing might serve well during debates, but your desire to be seen as a rough & tough military killing machine could be raising the heads of Marines, Navy and Army folks here who have spent a long career fighting in real conflicts.
I love muay thai and have practiced it going on 2 years and am willing to work out with you guys, but you still won't send me the contact info.
If you're ever interested in training in Houston, we can meet at a neutral gym - like One 2 One Fitness and train with Kru Pong. He is quite a gentleman, very professional and very friendly. He's trained 7 Lumphinee Stadium Champions and has fought professionally as well.

Hey, I can't spell either, but I took the ASVAB once and was told by the Coast Guard recruiter that I didn't miss any. Please don't laugh at me for wanting to be a Coastie. The urge passed quickly.

Duh...what ere you thinking!?!?
I would like to addrress judo here. The word Judo is derived from two words. "Ju" means "gentle", and "do" means "way". Like Jujitsu, a judo practitioner learns to use his opponents strength to his own advantage. "Maximum efficiency" in Judo techniques is important, meaning that you want to get as much result from your technique as possible with as little effort as possible. Another way to phrase this would be "work smarter, rather than work harder". Unlike Jujitsu, Judo was meant to be a sport. One of Dr. Kano's dreams was to have Judo become an Olympic Sport, which it did in 1964.
Today, Judo is practiced by men, women, and children all over the world, as a self defense, a way to stay in shape, and an overall way of life. The sport of Judo is practiced under established international rules that specify what techniques are legal and illegal. Respect and discipline are expected in Judo classes. A good judo class will not only teach self defense, but will also develop a higher level of self confidence and esteem in the judo student.
The techniques of Judo involve Nage Waza (Throwing Techniques), Katame Waza (Pining), Shime Waza (Choking Techniques), and Kansetsu Waza (Arm Locking Techniques).
Theres an extremely violent move from judo called o soto gari. ill describe it, you start with an outside run to your opponent, grabbing there collar and elbow. Then throw them off-balance with contact from your chest. You follow by reaping the back of there leg. But this is all done in one fluid motion with the contact and reap. Its my favorite move.

I guess you don't appreciate the fact that everything the military uses is made by the lowest bidder and not all the training that everyone gets is as high-speed, low-drag as their recruitment commercials.
My brother in law is getting back from Iraq in a few days. I'll ask him how many Iraqi soldiers 'tapped out' to his ne waza.
I know if someone was firing a Kalishnakov at me, I'd go in for the double leg, to mount, to Americana and show them what fer!!!
Hell yeah, Judo and BJJ are the SHIZNET for combat baby!!!
Second I really doubt a double leg or any technique to mount or any position is going to work against a gun budd.
Although I have never done Judo,I do believe Judo could be effective one on one against unarmed opponents, but like any art it has its limits.

I have never done Judo but have seen how they fight,to me it looks very realistic although it has its faults.
I disagree with anyone who says Judo is useless and is more of a sport then a martial artist, these people would never say that if thrown by a Judo person on pure concrete in a real fight.
Judo like any or most grappling arts are very realistic despite what some people may believe.
I do agree that Judo does need to be combined with another art however in order to work on street unless you are a real expert and know how to work your way in on any kick or punch coming at you in order to throw person and I think very few people can do that, but I could be wrong.
One fault that I think Judo has is not the techniques but how they use them, meaning they rely too much on grabbing uniform to throw or choke instead of actually grabbing person. In a real situation a person isn't going to be wearing his uniform also often grabbing someone the way they do can rip person's shirt before they manage to defend themselves. It would be much better to practice Judo by actually grabbing the person's hips for example in order to throw opponent or to choke opponent without using the uniform to do so,but other then that I can imagine a good Judo person being able to use it on street.
The only time I would doubt Judo to work on street is if opponent knows how to fight both stand up and grappling, however if Judo person also knows stand up fighting he might have a good chance of winning.
Putting a Judo person against a Pankrationist or Shoot fighter would be stupid obviously since Judo person would lose, however put a Judo person with stand up experience(such as MuayThai,Kickboxing,Boxing, etc.)against a Pankrationist or Shooto fighter and it would be quite interesting to see who would kick ass.
It would be impossible to say who would win,in this case it could go either way provided they both have equal skill and experience.
Anyone who doubts the skill of a black belt in Judo needs to be flipped, thrown, sweeped etc.by a Judo expert.
Put a Judo person against a karate person and my money would be on the Judo person because I don't see karate as a real self-defense art, since I have done it before.
Now put Judo person against MuayThai fighter and it would be impossible to say because MuayThai is just stand up just as Judo is just grappling although both realistic arts of self-defense.Mix both styles with each other and you will have one hell of an incredible art.
The same goes for any other grappling art combined with realistic stand up self-defense.Last edited by MuayThaiFighter; 09-14-2003, 07:36 PM.

Now you i likeabsolutely right say something else, i can actually commend in this forum ohh! please do! o soto gari, in your reponse Thai bri, is where someone comes down with there weight on mats if you fall wrong on mats it even hurts . Especially when you don't know how to fall and protect yourself. I like judo when it comes to that. But back to what i was saying, imagine if they fell on concrete like muaythaifighter brought up. In my mind thats game over. Take the strectcher out cause that fukkers done for. Theres also a variation where one bends there wrist into there neck. Creating a spinning motion. Keep in mind in proper technique this Move is done at full sprint! Take your Force * the velocity you create running * there body weight falling = Death. But i mean thats my opinon feel free to disagree. I love using that move its like crack cocaine.
