I asked my dad a week ago if i could join the wrestling team to boots my grappling and takedown skills. He said no, I asked him why and he said the falls could be injurious(is that a word?) and that i could also get internal bleeding as well. He says taht i won't feel anything now but when i hit the age of lets say 40 i'll start to feel the negative effects of getting thrown or takendown. I think it's a load of crap, so i'm checking with you guys. Can i get internal bleeding form gettin thrown(judo) or taken down? If so can you guys get a website or something to support it please? I want to show it to my dad to convince him it's safe except for the occasional broken arm if i fall on it.

Helio Gracie is like 90+ years old and still doing pretty well. Considering he is a main developer of BJJ, I think he's probably taken more than a lifetimes worth of falls, throws, and takedowns. Plus, he had Vertigo.
I am not sure I buy what your dad is saying. Look at guys like Rickson Gracie, who did dozens and dozens of full contact, nhb fights, and he's now in his 40's and doing fine.

To refuse the fact that you COULD get internal bleeding or any other injury in any MA is just ignorant..
Yes, you COULD get internal bleeding, or other injuries, but you could also get struck by a car next time you go to the super market...
In fact, the odds of being hit by a car is higher than getting internal bleeding from wrestling in highschool..

Hi
Ok although i can't point you to a site i can tell you from my own experience.
I got swept once while sparring and landed flat on my back, i got right up, and told my friend that was a great move and continued sparring.
That night my back locked up and i was in great pain, so after going home to rest, about a day later i was fine again.
Since then i get flair ups of this problem, approx once a year, my back will just lock up with pain for no absolute reason, and i won't be able to move, for about a day, and i know if i rest it will be ok.
I've seen a couple of doctors and physios, and one of them thinks it is too do with my spine rubbing against certain nerves every now and then and swelling and causing the pain. But thats a lot better than a slipped disc.
So yes, it is possible to get injuries that could occur down the track and come and go.
Sure the Gracies have been doing this for so many years, and they still fight, but who knows what intemittend injuries they are nursing.
Even thought i have this slight injury, i'm as fit today as i have ever been, and as strong.
So yes, it is possible to get injuries, which can show up later in life, but does this stop me, hell no.
Hope this helps

I am slightly confused by your post it sounds like you are already in a grappling art? If that is true what your father is saying is contradictory. If not, I can assure you in any grappling art (JJ, BJJ, Aikido, Hapkido, etc) the first tecniques you will learn is how to fall properly.
Regarding wrestling there is a disticntion between freestlye (college) and greco roman. Greco roman is mainly throws. With that said the rules in H.S. wrestling will state that you must maintain control of your opponent as they hit the mat. If you don't you will be disqualified (or maybe points reduced). The biggest issue in wrestling is not physical injuries (cauliflower ear water on the knee), but issues about diets and making weight. Maybe your father can speak to the wrestling coah for more assurances. Here are some links......I found the last one might which might help....shows the most common wrestling injury.

I am wrestling this year for the first time after doing some BJJ. Folkstyle wrestling (high school) is more about control and balance, similar to BJJ. Greco-Roman is like Judo, with more throws. Really, I think the bad internal business comes from cutting weight. There are rules against a coach forcing you to cut weight these days, I think so at least. I am wrestling at 189 which is a healthy weight for me.
The conditioing is tough but if you are in good shape you can handle it. And my view on this is that death is inevitable, so live life to the fullest. If you enjoy wrestling, do it. If not, don't. That should be the only issue with sports these days. Sadly, it's not.
I don't enjoy football, so I don't do it. If I enjoyed it I would take the risk of injury, but I simply don't enjoy it.
Just do what you want and don't have regrets about what you do.

You can get hurt from tripping on a flight of stairs for God sakes. Getting hurt can happen anywhere anytime. Some things are more dangerous than others granted, but that is meaningless...

When I used to ride a motorcylce, people would give me a hard time for them being too dangerous.
So I'd always say "more people die on horses/mules per year than motorcycles".
and they'd always get a quizzical look and then say "yeah, that's a good point"

If you do any form of heavy contact sport then, over the years, you will build up a bank of injuries to your body. These will feel worse, the older you get. It is a simple fact of life.
If you do no exercise your whole life, you will become a disgraceful blob who can't run for a bus, and then you'll drop dead early.
Why not choose an art that gives you good resaults without being too taxing on the body. I don't want to be knackered when I hit old (older....) age, but I do want to be fit. You can have it both ways if you are sensible.

As a dad, he cares about you and does not want anything bad to happen. Of course, he is grossly misinformed. There are a couple ways to get what you want. You could go to a class with him and let him see it is okay. Just watching others do it and not drop dead on the spot will help. You could also ask to try it for a week. The "just a little bit" approach is good sometimes. You could nag him, beg, plead ect... My kids do this. Never underestimate the effectiveness of being a pain in the butt. Get mom to ask him on your behalf. Men will do all sorts of things to please women or get them to shut up.
Look at this as part of your martial arts training. You are trying to get your dad to tap. It might take several moves. What are his weaknesses?
