Better to be judged by twelve than to be carried by six.

The answer is that there's no way of knowing so you defend yourself with extreme force and repeat to cops, lawyers, judges, etc. "I feared for my life." Keep that sentence in mind, don't elaborate, just keep telling them; "I feared for my life
      '.

        Ospardo,
I'll assume that you are referring to the knife situation.

However, if you are referring to anything other than an assault with a weapon or by multiple attackers, your actions could very easily land you in a place that you don't want to be. I personally would not like to be worried about dropping a bar of soap in the shower for a few years or possibly the entirety of my life.

One of my best friends is black, and I'm hispanic, even though I don't look it. I wouldn't want to ever have to pretend to be a member of the Aryan Nation to gain some protection.

You had better be justified in whatever you do in the defense of yourself. I saw a clip online (got the link from mma.tv) the other day, and it showed a guy getting pushed from behind with one arm by another guy. The pushee turned, drilled the pusher with a rear cross, and proceeded to knee him in the head five or six times. You could NEVER in a thousand years convince anyone that such an action was justified. What you could be sure of is that you would either be fined, do some time in county, or end up in the real deal for killing him.

Real world self-defense is actually protective offense, and I believe, as one noteworthy combatives instructor says, that you should be your own hitman, not bodyguard. However, that doesn't justify killing some moron for damaging your fragile ego.

The second is important. Avoiding dangerous places is a need. Why should I take routes that are dangerous (or I would better say unpleasant). A street fight is always unpleasant. It can happen your opponent calls the police and you have to tell them something (takes time; unpleasant).
Well, I'm from Europe. Wearing a weapon is completly unusual. Normally only police men wear weapons. The other ones who wear weapons - the soldiers - are in the depots.
With a weapon you always are in the conflict: Should I use it, and when can I use and on so on? It is only recommandable in dangerous areas.

just a little comment.. to the "when i see the knife.." thing.. you don't always _see_ the knife.. that is some of the point.. get a friend and a quite large blade with you do a dark alley.. make him 'attack' you.. with different techniques.. can you say when and when he isn't using the blade? now.. start with closed eyes, then open your eyes when he comes rushing on towards you.. do you see if the hand is coming with a blade? or just a bad punch..?

I have totally blanked what happened because it was such a panic, I assume I backed up and ran like a track meet. Once you see a shining chrome death in someones hand, you aren't thinking of how sweet your Rickson moves are gonna be, or that knife defense you learned in karate class.

At no point did I even *consider* trying to clinch, or block, or anything else. It went like this:

              1. see knife
              2. see me running

And you know what - I am DAMN glad I did.

that what i would do to if i were you...because its like this:
-guy with knife is a pussy...
-guy with knuckle is a gentlement...

maybe if i were in your situation...i will add onw more thing:
              1.see knife
              2.say "pussy....!"
              3.see me running.

No, no, I totally agree. Your response to the threat has to be reasonable.

First of all, your first line of defense has to be evasion. If you can walk away from the situation, you definitely should. There's also verbal defense; if you can talk the attacker down and calm his anger, you definitely should try to. And if all else fails, then you must defend yourself.

But here you must make sure that the "unavoidable" fight is a short one. Training usually disappears with the adrenaline rush even tho' any lawyer will stilll make you responsible for it in the aftermath. The objective still remains to make the fight short and the only way to do that is to use excessive force. And by that I mean sick, insane, apallingly wet violence that will discourage the opponent(s) from prolonging the engagement. And once it's over - get the hell outta there.

I agree with Great Sage and ryanhall. Nowadays, if you're confronted and get attacked, you could just as easily be charged with assault. I know this because I almost got charged by the parents of a boy that tried to jump me with a few of his friends. I broke the boy's jaw, nose, knocked out a few teeth, and gave him a concussion from slamming his head into a locker (this was in highschool and I was often made the butt of people's jokes because of my size)that He had to spend the night in the hospital for observation for. He told his parents that I had started it and the next thing I know, I'm sitting with my grandparents in the principle's office with the boy's parents with them telling me that I was some kind of thug who went around beating people up. Eventually they found out what happened and apologized, but its a scary thought of going to jail for defending yourself.
