  • career in BJJ

I have been studying BJJ for 3 years. All of my life all I have wanted to do was to teach martial arts. This was a fulfulling dream too..I have a blackbelt in taekwondo, a full instructorship in JKD, and am certified as a thai-boxing coach. I did alot of teaching in the past and even ran my own school for a while...but when the BJJ bug hit, all that changed.

BJJ is all I think about. I want desperately to stick it out, get a black belt and open a school. But I train at a purple belt academy..not even directly with a real blackbelt. I go to class..I even take notes! But I just feel like time is slipping away. By the time I do ever get certified..I will be an old man!

What can I do to stay on track and maybe speed up the process? Is there anything you can think of that I could do in the mean time? What is out there for the hard core BJJ student? How do all of you make a living?

it would be hard to get a black belt when Amal will not even give out a blue belt

If it means that much to you you might have to move to California temporarily. Maybe you can find a great freestyle grappling teacher in your area if there aren't any black belt teachers. But a purple belt teacher can be great too, I've learned a lot from a purple that I train with.

Well actually ..Amal has Renzo's consent to give out blue belts and has given out 5 or 6 of them. I also dare to say..that in my travels, I find Amals blue belts to be VERY good when compared to other schools I have visited like GJJTA's.

I'm talking about Dave Ruiz (Colorado Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Acadamy. A RCJ Machodo Rep.) I do not know if I know you that why I asked if you train with dave.

                    Ok Josh,

Well no, I don't train with David Ruiz. I have only been out to champion one time. Like I've said, I live in Boulder and train with Amal. Do you train with David?
What about john crouch? You live in Denver? Have you ever been to Amal's school?

                    Thanks
