http://www.rickson.com/frame_artic.html quote"Have you studied other martial art systems? No" Rickson was able to adapt to many rules even if he did not study the art so do not feel ashamed He was also player in judo competetions but he never studied that either.

        My school:

        Ronin Athletics--SBG of NYC

Ronin Athletics - is a Martial arts gym in New York. We provide Jiu Jitsu and Gracie Jiu Jitsu, key components of MMA. Our gym is certified by Gracie University proprietary self-defense programs. Join us and become a part of our team.

        Can't recommend it highly enough.

A good school will have an equal emphasis on all of these. Try to find a school that teaches the full traingle, Renzo will probaly teach it fully. They have a class dedicated to the vale tudo portion of bjj on Sundays. Depending how much you focus on the stand up moves in bjj will determine how good you will be. Example is Rickson, he has never studied another martial art system but can punch and kick well and is skilled at takedowns. Nick Diaz is a full time bjj person who never cross trains and he knocked out a Lion Dens fighter.
So Gracie Jiujitsu emphasis on all those? how about non GJJ (BJJ teachers) ?

I said bjj and GJJ is the same. A emphasis is on grappling until you reach the level where they start teaching you the vale tudo bjj. If you go to a GJJ school it is more likely that you will learn weapon defense as most schools neglect this.

So first I read that you don't need no martial arts background to learn GJJ but then I read it says GJJ/BJJ is a ground fighting system that teaches you how not to hurt the opponent but just take him down "groundfighting" and I also read saying you learn GJJ/BJJ and usually you already have standup knowledge so they argue themself back & forth

You don't need martial arts knowledge before hand to learn. I said before you learn the vale tudo portion of bjj you have to be good at sport. They are not two different styles but 2 different facets of bjj. They are taught at the same school. Yes bjj is primarily a grappling sustem but it is a comprehensive art that also includes stand up self defense and strikes. Strikes are ussually to set up a take down such as a thrusting front kick to a double leg, a common technique used by Royce.

i understand now. so what if you're not trying to compete and just learn the art and maybe to teach later on , you still going to learn the striking part (valetudo bjj) ?

A good bjj school should teach all parts of bjj, sport bjj, vale tudo bjj, and self defense bjj. I have heard of some schools that skip the other two and only do sport but I do not know any in New York that do that. You are going to Renzo's or Gene Simco's gym right. They both should teach all parts. Yes bjj is a good martial art to start out with. Even if you are stuck with a school that does not do vale tudo bjj, the techniques are simple enouph that you could read a book or watch a video. The vale tudo part of bjj will be easy to adapt once you learn sport. Some good books for learning the vale tudo bjj is Mastering Jujitsu and the BJJ Master Text. For tapes there are Pedro Calvarho and Mario Sperry.

Thanks , Yes I'm trying to go to Renzo's because of the fact that he seems like a good guy, I don't know him yet but I will be going down to see for myself, and also because it is true what I was told that I don;t know if its him but they also teach Muay Thai where' he teaches so I'm guessing he teaches it or something I don't know yet. So I hope everything goes well because I really want to train and learn Self-Defense is very important to me , Muay Thai + BJJ would be my goal
